A few of those songs are great. Does not support your argument. Besides, those are old and not really mainstream. GC wasn't as bad as you think. They were better than mainstream music today which is the worst of all time.

the pop punk that exists now is >>>> virtually everything that was put out in those years. The reason is simple - it isn't popular anymore, so the record labels don't pollute it like they did to so many groups back then. Current pop punk is now much more of a DIY mentality and crosses over from the more poppy stuff (e.g. All Time Low), to the hardcore/metalcore stuff (e.g. Title Fight, A Day to Remember), and everything in between (e.g. The Wonder Years). However, the era you refer to had to exist in order for the current stuff to exist, so I try not to hate too much.
Wow way to list the worst offenders just to make your point. This was made-for-pop radio nonsense aimed at teenage girls. There are many, many such examples from every genre in every generation
Without insulting you, I'll just say that if you're a rock fan, you'd a have a good time at one of their shows if you gave it a chance

How about someone start a "Worst Era to be a Serious Musician" thread? I think that's more telling.
Today, it's harder to make mainstream riches, but it's actually a lot easier for a musician who is in it "for the music" to share their work. Soundcloud, Youtube, Myspace, Yahoo Launch, Pandora, etc all changed the way we access music and it makes more obscure music much more accessible. I would have to say that the late 80s and late 90s were bad eras for more ambitious musicians.

Now is the worst era because of tightly controlled national playlists. The playlists are smaller and smaller, and there's less and less local influence. It leads to bland, uninteresting radio.
