Some people clearly don't understand songwriting. It's not all about the lyrics, although john mayer does well with his lyrics, but it's much more about intricate progressions and crafting your own unique progressions throughout different songs.
John Mayer does this better than almost anyone I've seen. He is a true student of music and music theory and it's evident if you start dissecting his songs.

That's the issue I see all the time. True musicians can see the behind the scenes working and respect it. Learning all of his room for squares actually taught me chords I hadn't even thought of and I studied theory. His structure and production has been impeccable since his Berklee days.
Too many are just looking at him with a listeners judgement. His audience, facial expressions, influences, etc. anyone giving him an honest, non jelly, chance will see the forest for the trees with Mayer.

That's fine if its not your cup of tea. But he's got around 5 albums that aren't blues

john mayer trio was pretty good. like just that one album.
everything else he's put out is horrible. Only teenage girls on their period like that crap.

I can't deny his talent but he's an enormous douche and I despise his persona.

Fair enough. Not really what the thread is about but... Yeah I'd say he's pretty brash.

Yea I know, I was basically admitting that my dislike of him as a person colors my perception of his music
I've liked his later tunes more than his earlier stuff for sure

You and every other person to comment negatively. It's either his reputation or his target audience. Never his talent.

he's obviously talented
he's just not doing anything different

Who is he not different than on an album like continuum?
Cause if you say SRV or Clapton then I know you haven't heard it.

In a mixed review, Slant Magazine's Jonathan Keefe wrote that, "with no edge to the songwriting and with such spit-polished, tasteful production, Continuum just doesn't convince as a heady, soulful rock album or as Mayer's creative quantum leap forward

it's not as good as you think it is. it's meandering noodle blues fluff.
Posted on 9/28/14 at 12:47 pm to olddawg26
Just supporting the fact that Continuum isn't a great album.
Outside of that one Trio album and a few sit-ins with legends, Mayer has never really impressed me. He is talented, but has never put out a killer album to put him over the top. Until then he is just pop rock fodder.
