re: Why Jimmy Page over Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton in the 60s?

All 3 of Cream's studio albums completely blow away Zep's collective catalog primarily due to Clapton's technical virtuosity
I couldn't disagree more. Clapton's Cream discs always seems like nonsensical noodling to me. Add his lovely overfuzzed tone and it sounds like a bunch of pissed off bees... I'm sure it was the new sound at the time, but I don't care for it.

You're talking about my comment or the guy who hates Clapton?

Ginger Baker w/ Cream

It is not a "hate Clapton" thing.....he is over praised as a player.
My opinion obviously differs from the acceptable norm, I am ok with that.
Sorry I wasn't trolling, I was serious.
If Clapton twirls ya beanie, I'm cool with that. Just not my preference.

Plus, the songs are catchy
Well, if the songs are catchy that paints everything in a very different light. I've always hummed along with Cream tunes.

Y'all all need to remove the Page and Clapton cocks from your various orifices. Beck can play anything Clapton and Page ever recorded note for note and tone. They cannot emulate Beck. No one can. Clapton has even admitted as much before.

For all intents and purposes, Jeff Beck may be the greatest guitarist of all-time. Outside of Hendrix, it's hard to argue against him. Hell, he's like Prince gets better with age.

Last I heard Prince has gotten so good he has turned into fertilizer. He now is truly the sh!t.

I think that is true. I played with a guitar savant, he was cutting Hendrix, Clapton, LZ in the 8th grade. Not playing at it, playing it. Dire Straits, no problem, Dixie Dregs, no problem.
2 guitarists gave him pause - one was Beck, the other was that dude from REO Speedwagon before they sold their souls ala Journey.

Why the love for Clapton should be the question..... White boy blues.....don't own one record, nor do I care to own one. Over rated as a master. Mastered rippin off another art form just like Page gets accused of so often. He was all but irrelevant till the accident with his kid, then all the praise came.
Clapton and Page brought blues to the mainstream white audience, if not for them no one today would have ever heard of Robert Johnson, Elmore James, or even Muddy waters.

Moreso Clapton than Page as to those guitarists. However, Page was very instrumental in making the public aware of such legends like Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Dixon and Howlin Wolf with all the songs he appropriated with Zeppelin.

Clapton is vastly overrated.
Beck is incredible, arguably the best of the 3.
I love Page's style and sound. I admit that he lacks creativity and originality, but my goodness, his sound is pure audible fun. It's tough to listen to it and not just immediately want to get up and start dancing, punch someone in the face, break a window, torch a police car, and start a riot.

Jimmy's probably a better and more influential producer than he is/was a guitarist. He brought so many new techniques to the table that really beefed up Zep's sound and brought heavy to the mix in rock that had never been heard before previously. As a guitarist, he had magnificent technique but gained massive acclaim at a time when Duane Allman, Ritchie Blackmore and Tony Iommi were emerging as the top guitarists post-Hendrix.

Page
He also had the ´ear´, ´feeling´ or ´pulse´of the market.
He was also very good, but yes, he´s probably the first to tell you that Beck and Clapton do things he could never do.
