Strong hate OP. I have been to many EDM festivals and never once seen a fight, over 100k people having the time of their life listening to music that puts you into a state of trance.

Yea that sounds kind of cultish to me

It sounds like B.S. to me.

i'm sure there are fewer fisticuffs than a death metal festival, but skirmishes are gonna happen.

I have a friend who got into it and now all she ever talks about is how all these music festivals are life affirming and she lives for the concerts and stuff. She's always talking about how she's having religious experiences that nobody can understand at these dirty music festivals and concerts.
It's very cultish, why is that?

Mormonism is a cult.*

EDM is a music scene. There are no blood orgies after the sets. People like it because they like the music and the festivals are a good time.

It sounds like the rave scene in the 90's, except replace "dirty music festivals" with The Outer Limits/State Palace Theatre/some random warehouse.

And before the rave scene of the 90's it was the Acid House and Warehouse Parties of the 80's. It's been around a long time. Only thing that changes is the subgenres or the morphing of electronic music.

back in like 2005 & 2006 it was the cool thing to hate on.

huh? no.

EDM sucked arse for the most part in 2005 & 2006.

It wasn't until new technology/more powerful VSTs were created is when EDM came on strong in the scene...the back half of 2006 was when it started to become popular again.

2000-2005 it was dead as frick

now pretty much any no talent arse clown can make a cool sounding EDM track with just a little bit of music theory knowledge.

eta: people didn't REALLY start hating on it until it invaded their top 40 radio stations and the festivals started having better attendance than their precious rock bands...just take a look at Electric Daisy in Vegas attendance

2008 - 65k
2009 - 99k
2010 - 185k
2011 - 230k
2012 - over 300k every day for 3 days

and of course every year the price of the ticket is more expensive, every year more and more US festivals pop up in every city...TomorrowWorld in Atlanta, Electric Daisy in various cities...

like anything popular, people will hate on it

Yep, I can specifically remember when it started getting huge from mid-2009 to 2010. Just exploded. All these kids that had never listened to electronic music before started wearing neon hats and tanktops while going to Skrillex and Pretty Lights shows.

The neon colors & furry leg warmers kill me. Kids these days.

EDM def isn't going anywhere. And I'm glad it's not! As for it being a cult, not true. I've made some lifelong friends who I consider family through the "rave scene". And no, I'm not on drugs/rolling/Molly/whatever. I just legitimately love the music & going to festivals and meeting people who love the music just as much as me.

Thats the american lets rage scene. You rock that over here and get laughed at. It also pretty much screams im a newb to the scene. Tend to the the Skrillix types.

I had written a long response to this quote up above and then deleted it when I realized that EDM is not what I was playing/listening to in 2005/06

I hate the term EDM now, for what it has been used to describe.

In 2005 and 2006 I was spinning Nu Skool Breaks and some quality House music. The term EDM was used, but it wasn't used to describe commercial dance acts like Avicii Deadmau5 Skrillex etc.

So I will say this. Underground Dance music did not suck in 2005 or 2006 LOL. Maybe the guy above is new to all of this? It's so funny to read some of the comments here. I was around during the Rave explosion in the early 90's, the West Coast and Florida breakbeat explosion of the mid to late 90s, the Nu Skool Breaks explosion of the early 2000s, and the South LA Rave Scene in general since the early 90s. 2005 and 2006 had great music as well.

I think trance is awful so IMO it sucked. And to the poster below you. no one cares you listened to music in the 90s. Me too congrats.
