Why is Deep Purple not as big in America as they are internationally?

They are a solid bluesy hard rock band. Not saying they should be Led Zeppelin huge, but they should be known for more than Smoke on the Water.

My cousin was really into deep purple. I think a big reason is their songs are pretty long, and don't work with radio play.

Overshadowed by Zeppelin and Sabbath

Hush is a great tune. Loved the Crowes covering it a few years back.

I was always a fan of Deep Purple. They were (I think) the first band to combine hard-driving rock with that growly fuzz-organ sound. (Uriah Heep was another one.) I felt like Blackmore was a really talented soloist and most of his solos were improvised on the spot. There was quite a lot of talent in that band across the board. As for Smoke on the Water, it's easy to dismiss it -- I mean it's just 4 notes right? But there's more subtlety in that song than most people realize.

Expound please. Not doubting you. I'm interested.

I think they are known for much more than that by the serious rock fan. Back in the 70's/80's they were huge. "Smoke" is their "Stairway" (not necessarily up to par musically, but their most famous song), but their catalog is amazing.
Once again, they are NOT Zep, and they didn't have a character like Ozzy to keep the PR train going (making Black Sabbath bigger than it would have been), but they were up there for a long time.

I'm not claiming it's Beethoven's 9th or anything...
It starts out with that riff that everybody knows by now...or think they know. Most people actually play it incorrectly. Jon Lord is doubling Ritchie on the fuzz organ. You don't really even notice it at first but it adds depth and a "harder" edge to it. Then Paice comes in on the high hat in sixteenth notes throwing in the occasional ghost note and accent. Then it continues to build with the bass entering, again with a lot of fuzz in it. So the net effect is this building of tension that creates a relentlessly driving beat. It sounds like every rock band ever but yet is totally unique. I especially like Jon's organ part during the verse. Adds some syncopation to what is otherwise a pretty straightforward melody. Most people only hear the guitar riff but if you listen closely there's a lot going on underneath and that was what was so good about Deep Purple -- the layering of simple ideas to create something more complex.

Nicely stated.
Will have to give it a new listen

Other than the Beatles, Stones and Zeppelin I can’t think of any non American band who are as big in America as they are internationally.
To get big in America you have to kiss a lot of arse and be clean cut, and also tour the whole country a few times. A lot of acts will find it hard to slug it out.
Take Oasis for example. Very few bands had as many radio friendly songs as Oasis but they are known as a 1 hit wonder in America. When they fell out and cancelled a US tour half way through their shot at stardom in America was doomed.

Same reason the blues aren’t bigger in the country it was invented in, USA sucks at music appreciation, but loves the radio...

long as frick songs
no prettyboy frontman
revolving band members for the last 50 years. The drummer is the only guy on all the lineups.
20 albums releases.........only 2 or 3 are in the Zeppelin,Floyd, Sabbath league of awesomeness. ( Machine Head, Burn and Perfect Strangers IMHO.... ) i.e. LOTS of filler.
76 - 84 They did nothing...........no record, no tour , no promotional stuff.......

Pretty sure you should add Deep Purple In Rock to that list.
I think they are woefully underrated as one of the proto-metal founders of Heavy metal/Heavy Rock. They melded real music chops, with solid rocking songs. Heavy influence on NWOBM bands like Maiden. I would add them to the Mt. Rushmore of early bands that molded Metal along with Zep, Sabbath, DP & Priest.

I own Shades of Deep Purple, Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, and Who Do We Think We Are. They have one of the top 3 rhythm sections in rock history. Plus compare their early psychedelic influenced material to where they ended up by the end of Mach III lineup. It's hard to believe the same band that released Hush put out Burn.

Lazy live in 1972 with their classic lineup. One of my favorite rock jams of the era--organ, guitar going back and forth. Classic.
