Why doesn't Lynyrd Skynyrd get more respect these days?

Steve Gaines and Allen Collins were guitar gods. Ronnie Van Zant was an all-time great front man. They were original, had great song writing, great all around musicianship.
They were huge at the time of the plane crash and greatly respected at the time. Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama have become cliches even though they're great songs. So what happened to their legacy?
Is it just because they have a funny name and are southern? Did the current group of people touring under their name taint their image that bad? The association with the confederate flag?
You Got That Right - 7/13/77
Call Me the Breeze - 8/21/76

Don't know what you're talking about. They get massive amounts of respect. Always have for as long as I can remember, and I'm getting to be an old fart.
Ed King was as good a guitar player as any of them, btw, and Gary is no slouch at all.

By people who know what they're talking about they do. But they also get a lot of disrespect and made the butt of jokes.
Ed King was amazing in his own right, but I just think Collins and Gaines were on another level. The Steve Gaines lineup was by far my favorite because Steve Gaines. Even Ronnie knew how great he was and said he'd outshine the whole band one day.
If I ever met the devil at the crossroads, give me Steve Gaines musical ability in return for my soul.
As for Gary, great player but I lost respect for him by the way he carries on under the name disrespecting their memory. There is no Skynyrd without Ronnie, I don't care if you do have his baby brother. Its a poor mans knock off.
Artimus Pyle has the self respect not to go for that money grab.

The reincarnation of the band that toured after 1987 ruined their reputation. Perpetuated the idea that they were a trashy biker band.
The real Lynyrd Skynyrd died in 1977, unfortunately, the new version of the band toured for many more years than the original and gave people the idea the original band was something it wasn't.
Also didn't help that they were never embraced by coastal hipster music writers.

Agree but SG was a level or 2 above AC and I'm a giant AC fan

You're drunk or just uninformed....AP isn't in the band for a reason and it's not that he didn't want to go; he wasn't invited for a reason.
I don't care for JVZ's vocals fronting LS, never have. IMO Dale Krantz was the perfect replacement for Ronnie; love her vocals.

I feel like they get too much...

This is the correct answer. Folks that remember LS pre-77 give great respect to what was a great band. The new LS is the Molly Ringwals of southern rock( sorta cute for a moment but really a big joke ).

They get to s of respect. The only real knock against them is that a lot of their hits are overplayed on classic rock radio.

They just got their own Sirius channel.

I think it's because the songs are so overplayed on the radio and the redneck angle
but those songs are amazing. I dig it.
twas listening to the solo out of needle/spoon on the way home yesterday, so great.

This. BTW I was 4 in 1977 so it’s not like I am personally hurt or anything. They were another plane crash band from the 70’s as far as I remember.
They just cheapened their legacy by touring on for 40 years. Especially with only one original member at times. Just a perpetual cash grab now.

The pre-crash LS get their due.
Their catalog was phenominal and the Gaines incarnation was poised to do more great things.
Post-crash, particualrly after Allen Collins had to leave, felt like a cliche of themselves.

Collins only played with the band once after the crash, at the first reunion in 79. When they decided to tour in 87 he had already had his car accident and been paralyzed.

Allman brothers aged better

In today's world. Their occasional backdrop is frowned upon.

Their hit song is “Sweet Home Alabama.” One of the shittiest states in the country. What more needs to be said?

SUB is a stupid poster and should be banned. That about does it.

I saw both versions and they were both great. They never got enough respect.
