George Lynch and Mick Brown were playing together in Hollywood-based The Boyz beginning in 1975. That evolved into the two of them playing in Xciter, who played the LA area club circuit in the late 70s alongside then-unsigned Van Halen and early Rhoads-era Quiet Riot.
Right, but it was Don that was the fraught angle here.

Big Scrub, how much of Dokken’s catalogue have you actually listened to? I’ll give you a Top 10 list of songs other than the ones you listed of (no particular order, just Top 10) Dokken songs you should listen to, if you haven’t already. Granted, it’s all dependent on taste. What you find cheesy, I might think it’s awesome lol.

1. Just Got Lucky
2. Lightning Strikes Again
3. Into the Fire
4. Heaven Sent
5. Prisoner
6. Don’t Lie to Me
7. Heartless Heart
8. Breaking the Chains
9. Don’t Close Your Eyes
10. Paris is Burning (Live)

Right, but it was Don that was the fraught angle here.

There are PLENTY of media accounts regarding Axl and Slash's feuds and Axl's fraught behavior with practically everyone and everything he encountered. Do gross sales or simply your knowledge of one music catalog and ignorance to another earn Axl the hall pass regarding volatility?

You cited an extended guitarist/drummer relationship in GnR as being a sign of an "original connection." Dokken had that too. Adler also got fired LOL.

EVERY band has feuds, it is the nature of the business of music forcing 24/7 co-existence among artsy, creative people with fan, label, and media- and publicist-massaged egos. On that note ...

I’ve been a big fan of 80’s hard rock/metal for many years, and one of my favorite bands from that era is Dokken. When I first heard them, I was blown away

I have heard of the band but don't believe I've heard a single song of theirs. hit me with a short list of songs to check out as a crash course

My question today is why isn’t Dokken mentioned in the same breath as bands like Motley Crue, Poison, and Def Leppard

You answered your own question, Dokken is not as commercial as the other bands you mention. Doesn't mean that they were not as good as the others, just not as popular. Actually they were better talent wise than Poison.

As somebody else mentioned, they were pretty big in the 80's. MTV gave them lots of airtime in '86-'87.

They had some good stuff but the elephant in the room is Don trying to sing these songs nowadays. Do yourself a favor and don't look up any current Dokken on youtube.

He is basically whispering & talking his way through the songs. It’s flat out embarrassing. He must be broke or really needing money to be still going out there as the only original member with 3 hired guns doing such a disservice to himself & the fans.

I believe the Heaven Sent video was filmed in that huge cemetery off I10 in New Orleans during their shows in Shreveport and New Orleans in 87. Saw Lynch Mob at the Sandpiper in west Shreveport in 90, George can shred the axe for sure.

Lynch was and still is my favorite guitarist!! After Randy Rhoads got killed he should have been the guy to replace RR in Ozzy bet Sharon liked the darker clad Jake E. Lee for his look not b/c he was a better guitarist.

Dokken Top 5

1) In My Dreams
2) Into the Fire
3) The Hunter
4) Heaven Sent

Don Dokken's solo album "Up from the Ashes" rocks also.
John Norum (Europe) is on guitar

Tooth and Nail, Under Lock and Key, Back for the Attack is the GOAT three-album run for 80s hair bands.

Underappreciated IMO

I love the “Up From the Ashes” album! Great songs with killer musicianship all around. “When Love Finds A Fool” is probably one of the best songs Don ever wrote.

Lynch did replace Randy kinda ... he subbed for Randy as the rock guitar teacher at Musonia (Delores Rhoads' music school) when Randy left for England to be in Ozzy's band.

When he auditioned for Ozzy after Randy's death, Lynch had a short haircut at the time for his day job. He insists that's what cost him the gig, and it was a Sharon decision.

Ironic in that it was right around this period that Ozzy shaved his own head during a drunk episode in New Orleans.

Of course. Everyone knows it devolved into the Axl dysfunction show. My point is, they were at one point really linked as 5 scrubby nobodies that had real personal connections via background AND lived experience as nobodies. As you no doubt know, Izzy and Axl went to high school together too.

I know you know about the fraught relationship between Dokken and Lynch. This isn't that complex. They were pissed at/hated each other on DAY ONE.

Pilson's (insider) insight on "the feud"
That's an interesting account. Mick and George give a different story of Don stealing their Xciter songs to kickstart the first album and then "accidentally" naming the band Don Dokken. For Don's part, he claims those two attempted to get Xciter back together AFTER they saw Don get the record deal.

Again, all of this is prior/during the FIRST ALBUM. They weren't even really a band yet. That's way different than Axl deciding several years in that he's the driving force and thus wanting to redo the splits. Those guys had lived together and fought the world to create their sound and get a record deal. Dokken was barely even drawn up on paper with big disagreements from the get go.

If you're saying you have inside info that I don't have merely from the reportage I've been limited to over the years, then that's fine. But, failing that, I stick by my claim that Dokken was doomed from the start and never really had any chemistry. It was just hired guns.

He is one hell of a guitarist! Have a few of his solo albums from the late 80’s and early 90’s. Really dig his sound, his tone and phrasing. Big fan. Love everything he’s played on.

He also did a version of I'm Eighteen on one of the Alice Cooper tribute albums. It absolutely smokes.

I know this one! It's a GREAT example of why they weren't as big. This is so utterly cheesy and dated sounding - especially that a capella intro.

That isn't to say I don't appreciate the musicianship - Lynch is out of this world, obviously. But the songs just aren't there, man. (I'm trying to plow through the rest of your list in hopes of finding some good ones)
