Ween plays several radically different styles yet they are critically acclaimed.

There was plenty of backlash when the Beatles changed, but other people started taking them seriously. They got better.

In fact, some bands nowadays tell themselves to wait a few year so that they can get the best music they can make to their fans.

Lennon, McCartney & Harrison were awesome enough songwriters and George Martin was an awesome enough producer that they didn't need to do that.

2 incredible songwriters. Maybe 3.

If any of the 3 is a maybe, it's Paul.

Lennon had a tendency to want to stick with pure rock 'n roll (w/ the odd experimentation every so often) whereas McCartney was more inclined to go with a more pop approach (which Lennon detested and was a serious bone of contention within the band). Harrison was probably the best songwriter of the 3 by the time the band broke up, but unfortunately was stuck in the rut of being considered the junior partner and was only allowed one cut per LP side.

plus Here Comes The Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Across The Universe, just to name several, all of which are as good as anything else McCartney or Lennon ever wrote.

Sorry this song was all lennon's. But you are right on the other two, plus George wrote I me mine and Long, long long which are two of my favorites.

so underrated, though the original mixing probably has something to do with it.

FWIW I have no problem with bands changing their style and I don't see anything pretentious about it.

Bands changing their style to sell more records...that's just lame.

Why do so many bands get flack for changing their sound and fans call them "pretentious" for trying some things that are a little to a lot different?

do you have any specific examples you are think of?

The most obvious example of a band really changing their style in the last 10-15 years that I can think of is Radiohead. When KidA came out, most of the fans seemed to love it. I think they were called pretentious later and seemed more like back lash against their popularity.

There are tons of people who "love the Beatles," but claim to hate their early pop stuff.

It's just about the exact reverse of what you're talking about.

And anyway I can think of plenty of examples of bands being derided for a new sound that is "too commercial" - The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, and plenty of others, but off the top of my head I can't think of anything like what you are talking about.

This item could almost be a separate list in and of itself. The Beatles (and their recording engineers) either pioneered or popularized Artificial Double Tracking (ADT), back masking, tuned feedback, spliced audio loops, distortion, equalization, stereo effects, multi-tracking (overdubbing), compression, phase shifting, and innovative “microphoning.” Although the Beatles are not credited with the invention of most of these studio tricks, they were responsible for directly inspiring countless musical acts that were desperate to copy their unique sounds.

This is only a small part of their resume.

I don't think you know what "style" means.

Did you link the right page? The styles invented by The Beatles do not appear to be leaping off the page at me.
