She was so fine back then.

Not closely connected to Johnny Cash. This thing was damn near a Cash/Carter family documentary. BTW, I loved it despite that quibble.
Yep. This was one of many problems with whole thing. Shoulda been called Country Music and Johnny Cash.
2. No coverage of the 70s Newgrass movement
3. A fleeting mention of Charlie Daniels. How do you not at least discuss his work on Dylan's Nashville Skyline or Devil Went Down to Georgia? I think we know why.
4. It felt like the whole thing was pandering to the coastal elite media that traditionally look down their noses at Country Music. Example, people that have never listened to Cash wear his clothes because the media said it was cool to do so. Look at us, we're cool, see cool indie song writers came here and rock bands recorded country style records.
5. Continuing the last thought, how are you gonna spend so much time on those guys that sold very few albums, and ignore the Southern Rock movement which was a cultural phenomenon, greatly influenced by country music and which sold a crazy amount of records? I'll tell you why, the elite media said it was cool to like TVZ, The Byrds, Gram,ELH,LR ect. The media, as usual, looked down their noses at Southern Rock as just a bunch of rednecks making rock music. Therefore, no coverage.
6. How you gonna talk about the 90s and only mention Alan Jackson in passing.

Agreed
After reading the previous post I was going to post this exactly.
I did not understand Mattea either. Where've You Been is a great story and song, but did not need 10 minutes.

I didn't need the media to tell me Townes was cool.
My main gripe was no john Prine. Correct me if I am wrong, but he was only shown in a photo.

In addition for the OP. David Allen Coe willl never get a ton of time devoted to him or have accolades heaped upon him in certain formats because of his old “bootleg” tape/cassette/album.
Can you imagine the shitstorm if burns had done 10 minutes on him and then a liberal group got hold of that recording? I can’t even remember all the songs. Just 4-5 songs and as many “n-bombs” as Scarface has “fricks”. Only one buddy of mine had it and I’ve always been hammered when it is broken out. Usually like campfire or bonfire hammered.

Prine kind of slips into the crack between country and folk. Never had any country hits that I remember.
I worked at a number of country stations, and we never played his stuff.

He had two of those albums. Underground and Nothing Sacred
You Tube
My guess is that if you tube knew the contents of that video that it would be quickly deleted

My son tells me they are being deleted as soon as YouTube catches each new upload.
DAC is a weird old man and has always been weird. He is/was a great talented singer and songwriter, but pissed off the Nashville mainstream. He will never get the credit he deserves.

David Alan Coe?
You've never heard his racist stuff? It's fricking horrendous.
Nobody in they're right mind would touch it or him, which means many on this board will not agree.

I mean, a really good country music documentary should probably delve into that side of it. Gotta take the good with the bad.

I thought he showed a lot of love to prison couples with his hit " Frick Anita Bryant ", and Little Suzie's shallow throat was a alltime family sing along classic.

Nobody in their right mind would censor music or lyrics, unless you are Tipper Gore.

As ever, reading comprehension is not very good amongst you Louisianians is it?
I was talking about the racist stuff. I don't have a problem with the sex stuff. As a matter of fact, don't bite the dick that fricks you honey just came on the radio because I have it in MP3 form on my phone .

Only somebody with a bone to pick would not think that was a really really good country music documentary .
David Allan Coe's racist stuff was so far from the mainstream at the time or any other time and is really not known by the country audience or the wider pop audience, it would be kind of stupid to bring it up
Posted on 10/17/19 at 8:18 am to Sayre
And, as soon as it had been brought up, many people on this board would have been all up in arms saying oh Ken Burns is trying to paint country music fans as racist !
Posted on 10/17/19 at 8:22 am to Sayre
Don Williams was a much more important talent and figure than David Allan Coe . If he's not featured, then DAC surely shouldn't be
Posted on 10/17/19 at 9:40 am to Sayre
Coe's stuff holds up better, and I am a Don Williams fan.

WTF??? sexist = OK racist = offended? I guess you will have to google what censorship means. I guess comprehending big words is not popular amongst Californians ( land'o fruits and nuts).

Talking about sex isn't sexist. What is sexist about Little Suzy Shallow Throat or Don't Bite the Dick?

Holy shite, another idiot Southerner who doesn't realize that there's more brain power in Silicon Valley and California than in all the South, combined. It's just small minded ignorant redneck trash such as yourself who don't have two spare brain cells to rub together that say such laughable stuff.
I should know. I spent the first 45 of my 48 years in Louisiana. Going to California to work is the second best thing I ever did.
I'm in Louisiana for the next couple or three months, dealing with dipshits like you, unfortunately.

I can't say the same. I like a lot of DAC's stuff, but I've been really digging Don Williams catalog over the last couple years. I'm ashamed to say I'd kinda forgotten about him myself and have really been delighted to be reminded how much I like his music.
