That chris stapleton song was quite clearly a song written with the intention of seeing radio play. That is obvious.
Its not horrible but it doesn't have the "substance" you like to pretend it does.

Define your meaning of substance for me and then we can have this argument. Until then its a futile effort.
For me substance means singing about something important, honest, personal and most importantly not the same thing everyone else is singing about.
Music, like any art medium, should be a very personal endeavor.
Elephant - is about a friend dying of cancer. Thats substance
You can have the crown - is about Sturgill struggling all his life to break through yet always being too rough while at the same time not "outlaw" enough. Thats Substance
Deadman's Blues - is about how the road demands every single ounce of a musician. Nothing less. Thats Substance.
3:59 am - at its most basic level is about how life grinds a man down. Thats substance
