Chris Squire, John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Flea, Geezer Butler, Paul McCartney, Steve Harris, Phil Lynott, Les Claypool, and Lemmy Kilmister were hardly unneeded. A lot of band creation, writing, and playing style added to their respective bands in that list.

David Crosby... In any group he was in.

Robert Plant. Why does a band like Led Zeppelin need a tambourine player?

Frankly, I think this is passive aggressive on the part of Hetfield and Ulrich - Cliff died and they "replaced" him with Jason and (then) Robert. They need a bass player, but they don't really want one.
Just look how buried in the final mix Jason was for AJFA.
I like Metallica and all that, but the internal drama in the band, all the way back to Mustaine, is more appropriate to junior high school than a rock band.

quote:Nah, this is a bad take. First of all, we're talking 40+ years. The band was barely fully formed when they made the (correct) decision to kick Mustaine out. Things were moving along spectacularly until an unimaginable trauma was visited upon the band. It's impact on an already badly damaged Hetfield is hard to overstate. Still, they quickly found a worthy replacement, and Jason lasted for almost 15 years (and he was NOT buried at all in Garage Days, which was prior to AJFA. I actually blame AJFA on Fleming Rasumussen).

James struggled with substance abuse all along (very hardly an outlier in major rock acts), yet had the courage to address these demons head on and fairly publicly. They hired Trujillo who has now been in the band for more than 20 years. What "internal drama" are you saying has happened in that period?
I would argue there's LESS drama than most big bands. No substitute singers, also out on tour with versions of the band. No spouse stealing/swapping, etc.
Beatles, Stones, CCR, Guns, etc. Certainly WAY MORE drama in those.

Maybe more accurate to say "public drama" since they made a whole arse movie about it.
I say that as a Metallica fan.

Meh. They never should have released that dumb movie. Killed the mystique forever.
And after the Napster thing...

He plays Cliff’s lines better than Jason. (But RIP Jason’s backing vocals on Creeping Death).
Anesthesia and Orion are now regulars on tour. Anesthesia was shelved for Jason’s whole career (I think he’s on record for doing it once) and the only person to ever go for Orion live has been Robert.

Dave Grohl on that first Foo Fighters album.

I forget your age, but I assumed we are around the same age, with you maybe a touch younger, but they had a badass reputation, at least through the black album. Sure, Load/Reload had some folks do a double take, but that silly movie turned them into parodies of themselves.

There were ways to do things and attacking the fans was probably the wrong angle to take, at least in hindsight, wouldn't you agree?
