2) Elton John- he came with energy and fire for "bitch is back" "crocodile rock" as well as others but when he turned it slow for "candle in the wind" or "your song" he brought everyone with him. It was slow, emotional, and great. Amazing pianist with an amazing voice
Sounds better live. No way to simulate his energy in a studio.

It's like the guitar that George Strait wears instead of playing is actually a CD player and he just walks out and pushes Play.

Tool's whole goal live is to sound as close to the album tracks as possible, with the odd exception every now and then like when they re-imagined Push It for a while.
After having seen them six times now, I wish they'd not try and stay so close to the same formula every single time.
Somebody mentioned Rush, and while they do sound great live, there is a little more variation than one might assume if you listen closely. When I go back and listen or watch Moving Pictures era concerts like Exit Stage Left, I find they were much more note for note with the album tracks than they are for their more recent tours. Neil Peart doesn't use nearly as elaborate an ensemble of bells and what not as he did back when.

I was amazed at how good RHCP sounded live bc I wasn't expecting the singing to sound as good.
I was pleasantly surprised too. A.K. really held up his end of the bargain.
But the best thing of all was getting to see the singular greatness that was John Frusciante. They're a pale, sickly imitation of themselves without him.

This x100
Seeing them jam with The Meters at Voodoo '06 is one of my favorite concert moments

Rage Against the Machine, Drive-by Truckers, Iron Maiden, Social Distortion.

Radiohead and Muse both surprised me.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Porcupine Tree. They're in the running for best thing going concert-wise. Unfortunately, with Stephen Wilson so deep into his solo stuff, we might have seen the last of them.
Check out this 17 minute masterpiece.

I'll venture to say most bands pre 1980 sound fine live. They have to. Editing was pretty hard to do in the studio and without a great chemistry, would just never work. Bands before online downloading depended on promotion and touring. There was no way to "preview" a song, you had to tour and grow a following. That being said, my favorite artists that are as good or better (due to talent, room to branch out, or energy) are....
Elton
DMB
John Mayer
Ben Folds Five
Foo Fighters
Third Eye Blind
Rush
worse than albums -
Counting Crows - Huge fan of them and especially adams lyrics, but the concert I was at he was waaaay too "talky" with the lyrics and it threw the concert off
Incubus - Once again, albums sound great and are always classics to listen to for me, but the show I was at was not good.
Van Morrison - Crazy right? Just not a fun guy to watch. Very talented, very good musician, but no crowd interaction, no energy.

DMB was BETTER live than recorded.
RATM, Voodoo '07, if you weren't there, you can't understand the magic.
M.I.A. was fantastic live. As was No Doubt.
Smashing Pumpkins were garbage.

I'd much prefer bands sounding better live than they do in the studio. If I'm ever looking into an artist or deeper into another artist I always try to find some live recordings before listening to the studio.

Led Zeppelin. Listen to the BBC Sessions or even better, How The West Was Won. Their albums are almost unmatchable, but live they were on a whole other level.
