I'm teaching myself guitar and can bang out a melody on a piano, but I'm mostly into the songwriting aspect.

Are these instruments easy to transition from one to another or do you have to learn a whole new instrument?

Piccolo and flute are in the same key with same fingerings, so they're easy to transition between. Oboe is totally different, but at least it's also in the same key.
