I was only "primary" to a particular guitar platform when I was younger and had and could only afford one guitar. Guitars are so affordable and readily available nowadays, you can have a couple Squiers and a couple Epis and cover all kinds of sonic ground without breaking the bank.
I like both/each for what they bring unique to the table. Leaning hard towards one platform or the other is fine but me personally, I kind of view it as having a Crayola box with only one color of crayons inside.
That's how I look at it. Each guitar fills a niche within my collection and I try not to have too much overlap between guitars. I also try to avoid one-trick ponies.
So for example, I have a Tele that has a lipstick pickup in the neck to give a bluesy sound but it also has a humbucker in the bridge that I can get a great dirty rock tone out of.

I’ve been having a 1981 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty since, wel, 1981. Bought a Jackson RR3 a while back and haven’t played the Gibson much since. The Les Paul was obviously a great guitar to play all through school and for years after, but once I got the Jackson I just loved the way it felt. Every now and then I try to break out the LP for a ride, but I can’t force myself to play it. I just hate the neck after playing the Jackson. The Jackson only cost around $600, so it isn’t even one of the high end models. Probably going to jump up to one of the Pro Series models next week for a slight upgrade.
I’ve never been a Fender fan, though I played a friend’s years ago and it felt nice. Never cared for the appearance though as a heavy metal guy.

I have both. Not a professional by any means, just enjoy playing. Both of my electrics are lower end on the scale.
My Fender Strat is a Made in Mexico 1999 model. My Gibson is a Les Paul Studio Faded T 2016 model.
Love them both, but I've had the Fender for a long time, and only acquired the Les Paul last year, so I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the Gibson.
Both are great guitars, but I'm playing my Gibson a lot more recently. I think if I had to sell one, it would be the Fender.
Something about the Les Paul just feels right...the neck, the weight of the guitar, and especially the sound from the humbucker pickups.
Think I paid $399 in 1999 for the Strat brand new.
Paid $550 for the used Gibson with a hard shell case in early 2017.

I did the opposite. I have a 78 LP Custom that I played for years then at some point I switched to strats with maple necks. I find strats a lot more comfortable to play. It doesn't help that my Les Paul is pushing 12 pounds

I have a LP, a maple neck tele, maple neck strat, semi hollow Yamaha, and semi hollow Ibanez for electrics, I play them all, all the time, and never give any thought to it just pick one up at random and play.

I'd be happy to take that LP off your hands. I'm used to playing a heavy guitar.

Wait what? Is that how much guitars weigh? I thought my Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray was heavy at 9+ pounds

old quality LP's are heavy as f&%k, because they're made of really good, dense wood. That is a big part of what gives them that full rich sound and seemingly endless sustain. However, that's also why you'll rarely see someone play one on-stage. Those bad boys are typically reserved for studio work only because they're such a hoss to carry around your neck for 1-3 hours at a gig. Plus, they're so expensive that one would worry about damaging them with consistent gigging.

Market value is 3k+ nowadays. I'll probably never sell it for sentimental reasons. It was my #1 in my formative years, and I played a lot of shows with it.

Several bands I was in to toured/tour with them. Mastodon, Baroness, Matt Pike, Adam Jones from tool plays the old silverburst customs.
The late 70's customs used to not be that expensive. I bought mine in the early days of eBay around 2002 (frick, I'm getting old) for about $1000. I remember silver burst customs form the same era were going for about the same price. I really wish I'd picked one of those up.

$1K cash would get you a clean, all stock Norlin-era LP all day at the vintage guitars shows in Texas back in the 1990s. Very clean examples, $1200. And that was the flagship, high demand stock from the Norlin era - that grand could possibly get you two SGs from a motivated seller at the show, or definitely get you two also-rans like Marauders or Ripper basses. Far from the case today.
What's really wild is how 70s strats and teles have skyrocketed - that same $1K in the 90s would have got you two, possibly three worn or modified, CBS strats or teles. Their vintage values today is laughable, ridiculous, borderline insane.

Same here with my Les Paul. I was taking a guitar class in 8th grade with an old acoustic that was left in a hotel room where my uncle worked, and my parents took me guitar shopping. Got my ‘81 Black Beauty brand new for $600 at a music store that was going out of business. They were going for twice that back then at other stores.
I already had back trouble by then, and around the end of high school I bought a much lighter Electra-Westone Dynasty V and quit playing the Les Paul. It was just too damn heavy. However, I’ll never get rid of it. I consider it sort of a family heirloom now that I’ll pass down even though neither son plays guitar. I’ll give it to the one who isn’t constantly asking me for money, because I know that one won’t sell it at a pawn shop.
Pretty much every guitar player I’ve ever shown it to says, “If you ever get rid of it, call me first.” It’s in excellent shape too because I’ve never been good enough to play in a band, so it has been pampered.
ETA: The guitar my uncle gave me that was left in a hotel room and never claimed is a 1965 Gibson flat top. A couple years ago I researched the serial number to see how old it was. I’ll never get rid of that one either even though I never play it.

Here's my spring of 1976 Les Paul "Deluxe Standard," a factory Deluxe custom-ordered with full sized humbuckers. The sunburst is in the pickup cavities, they were cut before paint. Only a couple dozen were made like this first half of that year. Gibson reissued the Standard in the fall of '76 and they've remained in constant production since.

Here's my '81. The gold hardware has faded, but otherwise it's a very clean guitar for an '81.
Added these to the collection yesterday. Ended up ordering from Sweetwater. The cabinet had some damage during shipping (at the bottom edge of the cabinet) so I'll have to get that replaced. The guitar is a Jackson Pro Series Mick Thomson Soloist SL2. It's not a USA model, but it has a mahogany body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard, and Seymour Duncan blackout pickups. I freaking LOVE this guitar. I already loved my other Jackson RR3 and play it instead of my Les Paul as I've mentioned, but this new one blows away the other one. It is so effortless to play and sounds great. The Marshall Code 100 is a real treat too. Already downloaded around 20 custom patches from the internet to clone the sound of Metallica, Megadeth, AC/DC, Judas Priest, etc. Works from your phone via bluetooth as well, but I haven't figured that out yet.
And here's the whole collection. Also in the cases on the left I have my 1965 Gibson Flat Top acoustic and an old nylon string acoustic, so 10 guitars total. My equipment is FAR superior to my skill level. Been playing over 35 years, but all I do is crank out metal tunes with barre chords - can't play lead to save my life.
Added the CF Martin last Christmas and the Jackson/Marshall yesterday. Love those Christmas time 0% financing deals.

My #1 for the past few years is a LP Special with a bigsby
But my #1 for 25 years is an American Standard strat maple neck
Different axes for different situations
Also play a LP Deluxe Light (that's what I call it, it's a hybrid) for straight blues stuff.. just a great Albert King nasal sound with un-potted pickups

Wow! My jazz basses only weigh 10-11 lb.
