For country music, what say ye regarding The Possum?

Top 5 for me. Could've been more of a legend had he stayed off the jug.
Or maybe less of one, I dunno..

Certainly a legend. Not sure I could put him in my top 5, because there are other artists who have been more influential and changed or help shape the sound and direction of the genre, but certainly one of the most unmistakable voices.
He also did a really good job of taking up and coming artists under his wing and helping them, either by lending vocals to a track, making an appearance in a video, or making sure that certain stores carried their albums.
I was lucky enough to see him live once when he opened for Travis Tritt in 1992.

Top 5-10 for me. He embodied everything that a country music star should be. Imperfect, drunk, hard partying, regretful, soulful, proud to be a hillbilly, internal strife. He had it all.

He ranks very high. Especially considering how big of a drunk he was.

Legend status. Top 7 for me.
Behind these for sure in my book: Merle, Hank Sr, Strait, Waylon

Arguably #1
To me Jones, Haggard, and Hank Sr are all interchangeable at the top
You have to remember this guy had hit records in 5 decades. No one besides George Strait can say that in Country Music. He also charted something like 150 singles. That's insane

Not usually a country fan but appreciate their talent and contribution. He has to be 5-10 likely.
Willie
Waylon
Haggard
Hank
Parsons
Strait
Cash
Alan Jackson
Jones
For my taste
Those crossovers suck.

i was never a big fan tbh, but my taste in country is very specific.
waylon and merle are the only country singer i listen to regularly.

The GOAT honkey tonk hero. You could walk in any dive bar or motel bar in the 70's and see a half dozen guys who looked just like him.
