This isnt purely a "rap sucks" as a genre thread. Ive been a fan of a bunch of artists since early on. Its more of a question of why is it still at peak popularity when 95% has been so embarrassingly garbage so long now. We're decades in and its surviving every other genre to come along

There is NOTHING interesting about this shite anymore. All the lines have long ago been crossed, all the GOATs are retirement age, nobody believes the drug dealer schticks anymore, its the WWE of music now

And what does it say about the future of music? It would seem we're well into a new generation that has less and less exposure to actual musicianship

And btw, no wonder the rest of the planet fricking hates us. We've infected the far recesses of earth with this shite

Germany

Russia

Vietnam

China

Sweden

Ukraine

Venezuela

Australia

Finland

Iceland

Belgium

Rap is now what rock and roll was in the 1960s. It will go away when there are irritating "classic hip hop" radio stations (or whatever the modern equivalent would be) and people in their 50s and 60s like it.

Nobody listens to it because it sounds good. They listen to it because it is mostly a youth-exclusive thing and people who are deemed "uncool" hate it.

Thats reasonable, but are we not there yet? Idk about classic stations but there have to be plenty of corny arse 50somethings listenting to rap

Go listen to your average 30-40 yr old white music critic reviewing a rap album. Its mortifying. "Boy, Meek Mill sure got in his bag on this one!"

It already feels well beyond decay

Rap is not going away any time soon. Your best bet is to ignore it. As you posted, it has now become international. Good or bad, that is simply the way things are.

It's a symptom of disposable trash culture that has gone worldwide now. It won't go away until a younger generation comes along who sees it as yesterday's music and starts to create fresh new music that actually takes talent to write and record. Then it will go the way of the dinosaur. I've been asking myself this question since the first Beastie Boys album came out. I've always hated it.

That is a fair assessment. I will be honest, i don't hate rap or Hip Hop as a genre. I actually like it. I merely hate what most it represents. The culture surrounding it is so terrible usually.

If the culture changes, maybe the music gets better.

Completely agree. And you can actually feel the machine continuously working trying to keep this shite relevant

Wake me up when the next wave of long hair kids with bad attitudes and drug problems shows up

Unfortunately they have the benefit of using the "soccer model" to keep it rolling. whereas dirt poor kids grow up with a 5 dollar ball and some chicken wire and boom, soccer field.
I came hear to post this. I was unaware anyone else had thought of it.

Rap is the soccer of music.

RnR was for middle class suburbans. Rap is for the urban peasantry.

If you can’t appreciate this, we can’t be friends.

The draw of rap has more to do with the culture and lifestyle than the music itself, though this is the case with all genres of music to a small degree.

The phrase "rap music" is oxymoronic. There's no music there and the lyrical content, if not openly offensive, is more often than not juvenile and trite.

I don't really bother listening to it. I haven't liked a rap album since the 90's pretty much. Maybe UGK's last album did something for me.

But your question is dumb. You should also ask when all the other craptastic music played on most radio stations is going to go away. It's not. There will always be an audience for stuff like that.

Rap isn't going anywhere. It's the only thing black kids listen to. They don't know the difference between good music and bad music. They're going to listen to it cause it's new and "cool".

I have been to classic hip hop parties. They are late 40s / early 50s people attending.

Rap isn't going anywhere. Its got a lower bar for entry to producing it. Its hard to do well, but to just rap a bit is pretty fricking easy, at least compared to playing an instrument.

The first time I heard rap was around 1983/84. I figured it would run it's course in a couple of years.

Oh well...

literally just listened to this song before opening this thread. It was under 'new releases' on Spotify. I am not a rap guy, but I like some of Gucci's stuff.
