Phil is from NOLA but the rest of the members of Pantera are from Austin, where the band was formed before Phil joined.
They were from and started just outside Dallas, not Austin.

Not even close. For one, they weren't metal. They had a more progressive or even Zepplinesque sound. Take Your Fingers From My Hair is a perfect example of their prog influences like Rush.

After reading this thread, no offense, but it's surprising how little rock talent has come out of a music rich state like LA.

Correct. People just lump them in with hair bands for some odd reason.

The lineup of Neutral Milk Hotel which recorded their two albums was actually formed in Denver as part of the Elephant 6 collective. Schneider had quit the "band", which didn't really exist as a going concern, to form Apples in Stereo.
But given that it was the brainchild of three people from Ruston... I don't know. I think of NMH as a Denver band, but they maybe should be considered a Louisiana band.

tons of rock bands come from louisiana. they just aren't on big record labels. same thing with alabama. alabama produces some of the BEST rock bands in the country but bands like the dexateens aren't well known.

Thanks for clarifying. I always associated Pantrea with Austin but knew it wasn't NOLA

Well, if we're listing Down, then we have to mention Crowbar too.

The correct answer(s)
1(a) DOWN
1(b) Acid Bath
1(a) DOWN
1(b) Acid Bath

Down is meh for me. Acid Bath was interesting and creative.

Yeah, I get that but I was mostly referring to major acts. Again, not a slight, there wouldn't even be rock music without LA, just figured NOLA would have produced a few more.

probably the most well known current rock band from nola right now that is touring/being played on the radio is mutemath.

Mutemath. great musicians and song writers

If that's how you feel, that's fine. I don't begrudge anybody their own opinion. I know I have many of my own that are not popular with everybody.
But if you're going to slag them, just say you don't like the music itself. When you call them something they're clearly and demonstratively not (which would be hair metal, or heavy metal period), you lessen the weight your opinion carries.

I thought they may have formed in GA too, but this from Wikipedia was enough for me.
quote:
Neutral Milk Hotel was an American indie rock band formed in Ruston, Louisiana by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Jeff Mangum in the late 1980s.[1]
