I'm looking to explore some new heavy music. I recently have been listening to Dimmu Borgir and other Norwegian Black metal. What bands do you like and would recommend?

Pantera
Killswitch Engage
Five Finger Death Punch

And anything that really is similar

If you're into that kind of black metal you need to check out Emperor. Might as well listen to some Mayhem, Darkthrone, Satyricon, and Watain while you're at it. Satyricon popularized the "black and roll" sound that Goatwhore does now where its kind of a mix between death, thrash, and black metal if straight black metal is too harsh for you. Also check out Destroyer 666 if you're into that style. If you want more prog, Emperor's singer Ihsahn's solo albums are great prog black metal.

They're not black metal, but you can't go wrong with Symphony X, Stratovarius, The Sword, Thank You Scientist. These are progressive rock/metal bands.
Early Opeth is amazing.

Metal bands I like a lot:
Baroness (Blue Records is one of my all time favorite albums Later stuff isn't as good).
Panopticon (American Folk Metal instead of Norwegian Folk Metal)
Elder (these guys kick serious arse with songs that really travel and cover some ground)
Deafheaven (call it hipster metal if you want, I love them).
Agalloch (Norwegian Folk Metal or Post metal or prog metal... I don't know. It's good).
Kvelertak (punkish metal that's so much fun)
There's a lot more awesome stuff out there, but that's a sampling of different metal bands that I enjoy as a not hardcore metal fan.

My two favorite albums are Unto the Locust and Bloodstone and Diamonds. It's rare for a band to be putting out their best stuff 20 years into their career, but those are two really strong albums.
