What's a good general foot pedal setup for electric guitar?

I don't really have any particular sound in mind, but if i had to say anything, i'd say i'm gonna be playing country/blues/roots rock kinda stuff. but i can't say for sure so I'm going for versatility I guess? but i don't really want one of those cheesy put in a number 300 effects pedals. right now all i really know to get is a wah pedal and a distortion switch 
i intend to buy all this stuff off of ebay, if that makes a difference

Delay Pedal is an absolute must for any style. I have a Line 6 ToneCore Echo Park and love it. It can do a ridiculous amount of things. LINK
Like you said, Wah is important (I'm not a big fan, but they still are fun to have) I have the Slash signature because it has a distortion circuit as well. Great pedal LINK
Stick with Dunlop for wahs
Chorus pedal and reverb tank can get some great sounds.
I doubt you'll need a flange/phaser/whammy pedal. If you want to play around with those (they're super fun to play with), then order this: LINK
It has several amps and cabinets, as well as ton of effects. I got one for $50 off of ebay and it's super easy to work with. I spent hours and hours experimenting with different sounds when I got it.

I have mines going like this:
Guitar - Tuner - Wah - Boss DS-2 - Tube Screamer - Big Muff Pi - Amp
Then my loop is:
Amp - EH #1 Echo - EH Small Clone Chorus - Phase 90 - Amp

As far as 'setup' MOST OF THE TIME you wanna go:
Guitar - tuner if applicable - wah - distortion - echos - flange/phase - amp
That is if you're going straight guitar->amp. If you have a loop then play 'sound changers' from guitar to amp and 'sound effects' in the loop. Not set in stone, but general rule of thumb.
Blues/Rock stuff? For a distortion pedal, you really can't go wrong with a TS9 tube-screamer. Think SRV. I believe he only used a TS9 and a wah. The Keeley Katana is another one. Rat makes some solid distortion pedals too but they may be a bit much for what you're playing.
If you want a phase, I'm a fan of the Phase 90s. It's basic and it works.
For chorus, the EHX Small Clone is decent although 'different' sounding. Their Clone Theory Chrous isn't bad either.
Just YouTube some different shite (pro guitar shop has solid demos) and play around on a few.

use the pedal on the effects processor for volume, or modulation effect. dont like any of the wahs that come with it.
im happy with it. tons of bullshite effects that come preloaded, but after you sift through them and get used to what sounds it can make, its pretty useful.

A lot depends on what type of amp you are using--tube or solid state? And what type of tone you like.
I've got a 30w tube amp and if I wanted a couple pedals for sound enhancement of music played in the "country/blues/roots rock" genres I'd do this:
Guitar > tube screamer/clean boost > delay > amp
I'd want to push my amp's pre-amp tubes to the point where during typical rhythm playing I can hear clean tones with just a little bit of dirt...the amp would be just on the verge of breaking up into distortion, but not quite.
I'd push the pre-amp tubes by setting the tube screamer's level control high and distortion level low. I don't want any fuzz/saturation/distortion coming from the tube screamer...I just want a clean boost of my guitar's line level so that it slams the pre-amp tubes on my amp...the pushed tubes is where I want my dirt to come from.
I'd set the delay for a short repeat, shallow depth "slap-back" effect.
I'd play through my amp's clean channel with bass set around 2-3, treble at 8-9, and mids adjusted as needed to make the guitar cut through...I've found that my mids setting is highly variable from place to place, day to day. Sometimes a little goes a long way, sometimes I almost dime it. Don't know why. I'd use a lot of reverb too.
Finally I'd get all the level and volume controls set so that I could use the volume knob(s) on my guitar to control overall level of clean/distortion. I'd be able to turn it down a bit to get clean and turn it up for more distortion/in your face lead playing.

Distortion and chorus should be your first priority.
I've had multi effects setups as well, and although they seem cheesy, they really are great for fine tuning the sound you want.

that setup literally works for just one type of sound.
heaven forbid the song has a mood change.
but on a similar note, if you look at youtube, they have rig rundowns for famous guitarists and its surpising how many of them stick with some shitty old pedals. once you dial it in just right, it makes something sound good, or adds an extra layer.
chris broderick is one of the technical advisors for axefx, which is like line6 for professionals. he still has a little mxr flanger and some lead boost pedal out on stage. same thing with petrucci. he does very little pedal work, but he has an evh flanger, (extremely popular amongst pro rigs i have seen) a chorus and something else i cant remember.
point being, the simpler path is usually better, but dont rule anything out because you are beholden to some ideal of how a setup should be.

Yeah I know. I was half way kidding (although I wasn't kidding about that being my setup). I've had tons of pedals - and I just keep coming back to the standard guitar tone as my favorite. I think people spend a lot on pedals when they could spend it on a kick -arse amp.
I think some sort of delay/modulation pedal (like a Memory Man) would be useful.
