You know, I grew up as a teen in the 90s and hated Country Music. Listened to mostly dance music (techno, breaks, house)

Someone left a George Strait CD in my computer recently and I listened to it on my commute. I left it in there for about 5 days!

George Strait's music is damn good. Well written songs and a great voice. I'm now a George Strait fan for life.

This thread will result in me listening to George Strait on repeat all night after work. Probably will listen to this Sturgill guy for the first time also. Hope he's good since he's coming to Birmingham this summer.

As far as modern country goes, he is untouchable.

If it's possible to be one of the best ever, and still be underrated... that's George.

That was his image and he's still 100% fine with it.

(but yes, he knew how to pick good songs too)

Most of the alleged country singers in Nashville today would break out in a rash if you demanded they play a little Texas swing

Buddy of mine told me about Sturgill a few weeks ago. Really like it. Reminds me of Waylon Jennings. Good stuff.

This song really captures his vibe especially at the 2:00 mark Sturgill Simpson "Life Ain't Fair"

I wish Sturgill would get mainstream airplay. He would turn the industry upside down and prove all the major record execs wrong. Their egos couldn't handle it.

I doubt it. Jamie Johnson is similar in style and while he had some success, he didn't turn the industry upside down. Sturgill is further from mainstream than Johnson, and he has less of a chance of conforming to the Nashville cookie cutter prototype. He'll never be a huge commercial artist because 13 year olds ain't gonna give a frick as long as Aldean, Luke Bryan and the like are shitting all over the place.

Maybe, but I don't think theyd care that much if it made them enough money

Yes, it would make one label money, but it would leave all the other labels with a bunch of shite artists to replace if a shift did occur.

That's true to a certain extent. However, if you would've given guys like Mark Chestnut, John Anderson, Randy Travis, etc, the same songs I just don't think they could've pulled off the pureness that George brought to the table. You actually believe you're watching a cowboy's cowboy when he's on stage.
