The Benny Goodman Story.
Nice, happy movie, with good music.

>The Benny Goodman Story

A blatant imitation of The Glenn Miller Story, from the same studio the year before.

A few years later there was The Gene Krupa* Story, which has a B&W noir, even beatnik vibe - a plot point has him doing jail time for reefer.

Rock Star loosely based on Tim "Ripper" Owens of Judas Priest

Round Midnight. Was based on Budd Powell's life (fantastic jazz pianist, who moved to France to escape racism). Great movie with a great soundtrack, and starred an otherwise non-actor, jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon, in the leading role.

I think it should, although it was largely dismissed as a Help ripoff. I liked them both.

But it’s surprising to note that we are two pages into this thread without one mention of A Hard Day’s Night. Not even by me.

In addition to the brilliant music, the cheeky comedy, and the surprisingly gritty b&w cinematography, Wilfred Brambell’s performance as Paul’s grandfather is reason alone to watch it - especially as he lectures Ringo on the values of “paradin’”

I like Crossroads, although it isn’t about a specific musician, more of a legend.

Rock Star - great soundtrack and it's sorta based on a true story.

I remember watching that one as a kid. It really turned me on to Jan and Dean's stuff.

I liked Love & Mercy, too.

Holy shite - it didn't even occur to me

In my defense, I became fixated on biopics for some reason

AHDN is the champ, but I'll throw out Jailhouse Rock for the Elvis fans.

Not biopics, but favorite movies about musicians?

"Syncopation" (1942)
"I've Always Loved You" (1946)
"Young Man With a Horn" (1950)

And a favorite film revolving around a bandleader, even if he wasn't actually a musician in the strictest sense?

"King of Jazz" (1930)

'Blues In The Night' was released the year before.

Pretty good little movie about a traveling band, w/a very rare acting role for Elia Kazan
