My dad and his friends always talk about how when 1984 was released by Van Halen that most people were expecting David Lee Roth and company to finally release a live album. Obviously, the album wasn't very well-received by many of the group's fans.

The only disappointment in 1984 was that it only had 9 songs. Van Halen's previous album, Diver Down was pretty bad. It had 12 tracks, two of which were "intros," and 4 covers--of which one was a Dixieland Jazz tune.

The music on 1984 was outstanding.

MGMT as a band ate all the food and took a big shite in their bed. I've read that their producer on Oracular Spectacular kinda hijacked the album and added a lot of stuff to it that wasn't in MGMT's wheelhouse, explaining why so much of their music after sounds so different. Im on a phone, will try to find link at work.

Good example. That album was awesome and everything else has been blah

It's not terrible, but kinda just... I dunno

I never have the desire to hear them, some of its a little over the top for my taste..

Check out Nude Beach's "77" If you like petty, costello, replacements, etc.. It's a double album, that should have probably been scaled back to a single one, but its pretty good...

Wild Flag. 2/3 of Sleater-Kinney back in one band and while it was good, it's just... okay. It was really missing Corrin Tucker screaming like a banshee.

I really like Mary Timony... Looking forward to the new SK... However, after watching a few episodes of Portlandia, CB is now very annoying to me...

You may also like the new Ex Hex... a great guitar pop record with hooks o plenty... Chick singer, if that turns you off (for some reason, it does to some people... doesn't bother me)..

Cool, thanks. What do you think about The Ravonettes? if unfamiliar, check out Great Love Sound, Love in a Trash Can, and Bang.

I have Chain Gang of Love and then they fell off my radar... I remember the big time JAMC vibe...

Which of their records should I dial up this morning?

I don't think they suck. I just can't find anything appealing. But I just feel it's me b/c I can't get into Radiohead either.

If you don't dig this song, you just probably won't like them:

Knife

They have poppier and more difficult stuff than that, but I always thought that was their best song

I love the Ravonettes. Great f'n band.

Grizzly Bear is certainly talented, their music is just boring as all hell. Comparing them to the Replacements, who are nothing but fun, just seems out of left field. I love the Mats (and Petty, and Costello), but I'm wholly indifferent to Grizzly Bear. There's too much thinking going on, and not enough glorious anarchy.

Brooklyn indie bands are not my cup of tea.
