Skankin… terminology that brings back good memories. But skanking was more kicking your legs out and elbows up. It was more “dancing” than slam dancing was. Terminology debates are never interesting or fun, so I’ll shut up now. Just call it moshing or slam dancing and I’m fine with it.

I was at a Modest Mouse show at the HOB in NOLA and this douche in front of us kept trying to slam dance and start a pit I guess. Everyone around had this "WTF?" look on their faces. He kept yelling at everyone around him and calling them "pussies."

Moshing isn't so bad, pretty easy to avoid if that's not your thing. What I do hate is when people start swinging their arms and legs around doing some kind of retarded karate, here's an example around the 0:19 mark, LINK

I'll take a page from Joshua Homme's playbook: If you wanna rub up on somebody, find a girl and ask her to dance. Then again, I feel like most moshers are going to be turned down, hence their moshing tenacity.

F that. If I got to the show early to get a good spot and a mosh pit breaks out where I am, why should I have to move to accommodate a bunch of selfish idiots who want to rub up on each other instead of watch/listen to the band that everyone paid to see.

Here's some general rules on moshing
1. spin kicks and other karate moves aren't moshing
2. if you trying to mosh at a Modest Mouse show or any non metal, punk, or heavy band you're stupid
3. if you're at a Slayer show and are sensitive and don't want people touching you, don't stand in the front
4. if you're an over protective douche who brought his sorosistute girlfriend to the Slayer show and don't want guys touching her, GTFO out of the pit
5. if your back hurts or you're a huge pussy in general, don't stand in the front of a Ministry show
6. if you're intentionally trying to hurt people, GTFO you're doing it wrong
just some tips I've learned in my experiences

You're crazy, the circle pit is alive and well, you just need to go to a metalcore show to find it.
I go to shows all the time and we throwdown in the pit everytime. Core dancing has replaced moshing during breakdowns but pits aren't going anywhere.
Just go to YouTube and look at shows for As I Lay Dying or Parkway Drive.

I'm guessing you either don't listen to or aren't aware of the non-metal bands that inspire moshing at live shows. It's also probably not your fault...Clear Channel assumes you won't approve of most of this music and it is therefore not played on the radio. Thus, most aren't aware it even exists
I was at Bamboozle in NJ a couple weeks ago and almost got trampled repeatedly by ever-expanding mosh pits (:csb:). And I wasn't hanging at the metalcore stages since I'm not into that scene. shite, even Less Than Jake had a huge circle pit for a couple of songs

I saw Dinosaur Jr at SXSW and there were about 10 guys moshing the whole damn time. They were so freaking annoying, especially because it was a small show. Dinosaur Jr can get heavy at times, but come on...
