What are your thoughts on folk music?

I've been watching the Ken Burns series on PBS this past week; it describes the origins of Americana and country in the 1920s and 30s and then progresses through the mid-century era. I absolutely love Americana and I think it's the first genuine contribution the United States made to music.
I play the piano, but I like to pick up the guitar and the mandolin every now and again and play some folk tunes for fun. My favorite live music events to attend are classic country (not that pop-infused crap) and folk artists' performances. I'm lucky to live right outside of Nashville, so there is never a shortage of talented musicians to watch right at my doorstep.
What are your thoughts? Do you like classic, down-to-earth, unplugged folk music? I love the mix of Anglo-Celtic and West African tribal music that is unique to Tennessee and hope we can keep this genre alive for future generations.

I enjoy bluegrass in particular as well as other folk-based music. I think bluegrass came from Celtic folk music, which I also like.
I saw Mark Knopfler recently and I really like the way he incorporates Celtic themes and instruments into his songs.

I guess you're talking traditional american folk music? I enjoy a song or two at one listen but get bored with it pretty easily. I go to a neighbors party every year, where I met my wife 20 years ago, and its a big traditional folk hootenanny. The neighbor is the dad of Michele Shocked and Max Johnson (fiddler for Uncle Tupelo,Wilco and the Gourds). He knows a lot of good musicians and I'll listen to a few songs then walk back to my house for a break and then go back over for a couple of more songs.I like more modern folk like Billy Bragg and Richard Thompson...who are English. And Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and a lot of the newer more rock/country americana such as old Wilco, Son Volt, Baptists Generals and a bunch of others. And the more blues folk like Lightin' Hopkins, Leadbelly, etc.

I love listening to singer/songwriters with just an acoustic guitar, whether they are true folk musicians or not.

Actually, I love folk music. I am a sucker for songs that tell a story, and that is the root of folk music.

I can find something redeeming in most forms of music.
What I associate with folk music were artists with a political message within music: Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, etc. And for the most part I enjoyed the music and respected the message: peace, civil rights, etc. while not necessarily agreeing with their politics in lock step.
As music to listen to it wouldn't be in heavy rotation for sure. Just once on a while.

That music was certainly based on folk music but I wouldn't call it folk music proper. Also there is a lot of folk-based music that doesn't carry a political message.

I found Torgeir Waldemar on Spotify, different, but I like it.
