Their upcoming schedule is terrible. I guess they gave up?

bump the thread from like 2 years ago that was under "who do you want to see at the varsity?" or something like that!

This entire town is apparently a quality music free zone. For a city of this size it is absolutely appalling.

I grew up there and dabbled in booking there at a few venues ... as a current outside observer it's pathetic. Varsity's calendar is terrible (as is their website). It's a bunch of BYOB listening rooms that are well intentioned, but boring as batshit. Maybe the moon will come back to life with the facelift from the Republic group? the varsity will step it up in the fall? A small room emerges that features a wide mix of acts (A gasa gasa for BR)?

Agreed. They occasionally bring in a good act but it's mostly acoustic singer/songwriter shite that is ok but only in small doses. That's the BR music scene.

I work right by there so I see the sign change daily. Half of them are bands I've never heard of and the other half are ones that haven't been relevant since late 90s early/mid 2000s.

For stuff like Theory of a Deadman and Sevendust I'll see people start lining up outside at like 2pm.

Only one recently that I might have enjoyed was Candlebox.

Forgot venues close down during the summertime. lol

It’s easy for them to put a cover band/washed up act on and know tickets will somewhat sell.

Whoever is doing the booking clearly doesn’t care or has terrible taste in music. Maybe both.

lol, the people who complain about the "scene" don't even go to shows. so THAT is always funny.

Dyson House has a great show with Jesse Daniel coming up friday. Honky Tonk/rockabilly with upright bass and steel guitar.

mid city ballroom is doing shows and mobley is coming there in july. they had neon mountain there last month and they were awesome.

dyson house has been doing great since they're been back up and running. BR has tons of great songwriters like clay parker and jodi james. Peter Simon with minos the saint etc.

I do think it's funny when people complain about shows but don't actually go to ANY local shows to know how good bands like loudness war and mayhaps are.

Quality golf courses and good music are absolutely abysmal in BR metro area.

That was at the casino, where any washed up nostalgia act should play.

Municipal golf is actually one of the few thing Baton Rouge does better than most cities of our size.

False. There’s always great shows in BR. Just have to know where to look.

Bee Nice will have 200+ people at the Jodi James clay Parker show Friday. Always quality music happening around town. There’s just s lot of people who complain online about how it “sucks” on message boards

People don't go to shows because the shows suck or cater to an extremely limited audience. Honky tonk/rockabilly is just not as popular as you want it to be.

people actually DO go to shows though. I know, i'm there. going to the other shows, with other people. that are there.

I just see a lot of people bitching about how the "scene" sucks when there's a ton of good music happening in BR every weekend. the people bitching are the ones who don't go to the shows

There are a few good local bands but saying tons of good music happens in BR every weekend is laughable.

That's your opinion not fact.

I was at the Beausoleil show at Mid City Ballroom this past Saturday and I'll be at Bee Nice this Friday(weather permitting). There just doesn't seem to be a ton of variety. It's mostly singer/songwriter or some derivation of country music. Chorum Hall pulls in some good jazz acts but I've only made it there once.

I will admit that I haven't seen Loudness War or even heard of Mobley so maybe I'll go check out a show next time they're around. I also saw that jazz combo Fibbra a few months ago and they were quite impressive.

A while back my wife and I were going through old papers looking for something and came across a Fun section (old Advocate entertainment tabloid) from the 2000s that we saved because a friend's band was featured in it. We were blown away by how many notable music events were happening just in some random week back then.

It just is not like that anymore, no matter how it gets spun through rose tinted glasses.
