there is a serious lack of creative booking for one across all of the venues .... it's very one dimensional at the listening rooms and there is a sense of regressing when bringing your own booze to a show. Something is very off about them. Again well intentioned, but they miss the mark about what partly makes going out to a show fun. Atmosphere and a bar.

The other venues that have the resources and agent connections simply aren't aggressive with an intention of having an interesting calendar. Maybe it's lack of support, empathy or just the market. Whatever it is BR is at it's lowest point of being a touring musician's town I have ever observed.

Don't have another talent buyer? The Varsity always booked a bunch of cringe, like Aquarium Troubadours or Mutemath, but at least Lord Bowen booked some good shows mixed in with that.

dyson house has been doing great since they're been back up and running. BR has tons of great songwriters like clay parker and jodi james. Peter Simon with minos the saint etc.

We don’t want to see local songwriters. I like them better when they deliver the pizza quicker

Basically everyone in this thread wants the varsity to book turnpike once a month and stop having rap shows unless it’s some ironic entertainment like insane clown posse

I play in 2 bands. And have my own business. Most of the singer/songwriters have real jobs. Good jobs.

That's what the Mid City Ballroom is trying to be. They've got a great sound system in there. 524 has been getting some great acts, but the place is a complete dump, and nothing but a headache to work with on the musician's side.

As for the Varsity's woes, it's the market, both on the consumer and touring musician side. With New Orleans so close, most tours pass them by. Plus, BR people straight up don't support original music as much as needed to support the kinds of niche acts this board jizzes all over themselves for. The place was full for shows like Clutch, The Sword, etc this spring. Plus, BR is always dead as a door nail in the summer.

The locals don't care about non-cover bands, and the students don't listen to rock music. This is the result.

I was thinking about going. The shows I've seen there have all been excellent. The only issue is the room is pretty damn big, so you need a lot of bodies to make it feel full.

You must play keyboard or something weird if you’re in a band and don’t work in the service industry

BR absolutely needs a 200 person venue that has atmosphere, a bar, creative/interesting diverse booking with a decent enough location. Every city has one and most college towns do as well. Hell, Birmingham is so much more interesting musically, food and bar wise than my hometown of BR. How did that happen?

bums me out from afar, but i did my part and hopefully more people step up and open interesting places. i admire the tenacity and dedication of all the listening rooms/ball room people, but those are depressing environments. sorry but they just are. BR needs a Gasa Gasa type in the worst way .... even if there isn't a band it would instantly become a good place to hang out. Another BR deficiency

The Bowery Presents created Bowery South and latched onto Birmingham - that's how. They've obviously done this in NOLA as well so no need to do it in BoRing.

Bowery South has elevated the profile of the Saturn .... but they didn't open the interesting bars, other venues and restaurants there.

Spanish moon?
Mid city ballroom? (Not a bar yet)
Hartley vey at manship?

The last several shows I’ve attended in BR have been packed or sold out.
Clutch, ICP, Melvins...

The Sword was pretty close to full as well. Not rock, but Morris Day & the Time had a packed crowd when they played at Laberge.
