I can see a Beatles-type band at a place like Disneyland because ... well shite, everything at Disneyland is fake. But beyond that, what's the deal with the tribute band concept? It wouldn't appeal to me as a musician and I wouldn't shell out money to hear a band that sort of looks and sounds like the Doors, Led Zep, etc. ... but isn't them. Agree or disagree?

I think musicians find it the most thrilling, because for a few nights a week they can pretend they are their favorite artists. I've been in a few tribute bands in my time.

And then nostalgia for people who are fans of certain bands... and at concerts you can meet people that like the same bands you do.

The only thing I don't understand are tribute bands for bands that are still together. But I guess if you can't afford to go to the big show, it could be appealing.

ETA: sorry for leaving this post blank earlier... too damn early for me.

Bonnaroo has a Van Halen tribute band scheduled during one of the prime Saturday late night spots. People are pissed over on the Bonnaroo boards.

Most people who go to see live music don't want to hear an original band. Playing covers is easy money.

Maybe at a wedding
I don't know anyone who goes to a live show and wants to hear covers

The Varsity wouldn't keep bringing in the same cover bands all the time if they weren't drawing a good crowd. The local original bands that play there don't draw.

I don't mind dropping 5-10 bucks to hear a live band play songs I know at a small local bar while I drink beer.

I get that, but I'm talking about a band that tries to look and act like the original—like the lead singer dresses and stage acts like Jim Morrison or whoever, and they tour and so forth. Not just a band that plays a few covers at a bar.

So you mean like Zoso?

I like seeing them from time to time. Closest thing to Led Zep that I'll get to see.

There was a fantastic Johnny Cash Cover Band (that was their actual name) in CS when I was there, before all the members graduated. They did the whole dress-up thing, and they were really dedicated. Some authentic equipment and instruments, period costume, they even had a girl who could sing just like June Carter, even though she didn't look much like her. An acquaintance of mine was one of the trumpet players for "Ring of Fire." They always packed whatever bar they were playing in that night.

look i'll never get to hear zep or pink floyd live, but i can kind of get to hear them live with a tribute band

it's not a difficult concept. the one led zep tribute that used to hit the varsity a lot was pretty solid

Well it's not because they aren't good or anything. A lot of people in BR don't like original music.

Because the Varsity is not actually a music venue anymore. It is a high volume alcohol outlet carefully catering to horny college students hoping desperately to get laid. If you're a band playing to an audience that is not even listening to the music, it's much less disheartening to have them ignore covers than original music. Not belittling the Varsity's business plan, it is well crafted and very profitable.

Sure it is. It just could do a TON better.

What's the matter with trying to recreate something that people missed out on? I saw Rain, a Beatles tribute band, and they put on a good show and sounded similar. I never had that opportunity before.

I bet it pays the bills.

Not everybody gets to meet Dave Grohl & be in his band.

I could probably pick 500 bands I'd hate to be a member of because their music is awful.

Who knows. You have to be a special type of moron to equate watching some jackass parade around like Robert Plant as being in the same stratosphere as seeing Led Zeppelin live.
