I must have been into other types of music in the late ’70s and the ‘80s because I didn’t really appreciate the musical talent of Toto as much as I do now. Really enjoy the vocals, guitar and the jazz influenced drums and keyboards on their tracks.
Africa. I’ll Be Over You, Rosanna, I Won’t Hold You Back. Even 99 is enjoyable listening even though the lyrics are pretty nonsensical.
A little sample

The wife and I saw them a few years ago. Great show. Steve Lukather did a little spiel about Human Nature and how that whole thing came about right before they played the song. The wife was like, "shut the front door." Yes, dear, there's a whole bunch of Michael's stuff that has Toto on it.

That could be the only tolerable song he ever made on his own.

Well, it's more than just "tolerable," it's a fantastic song. But it only reached #7 on the Billboard charts, though. Not bad, considering he had 31 other top ten hits, including 14 number ones, 7 is respectable. But you're right, most of his music is lousy.

"Fantastic" may be a bit over the top. However we agree on the utter commercialism of the rest of his career.

If he would have put more effort into recording and less into prepubescent boys, he may not have been labeled as the creep and freak he'll be remembered as.

No, it's an apt description for the song. And we don't agree on anything. We might agree that you're a tasteless troll with a tin ear.

And don't forget the Dune sountrack. Listen to that guitar riff as Stilgar joins Muad'dib on top of Shai Hulud. Skip to 2:00 Youtube

Just wanted to let you know I went down a rabbit hole based on this comment.

Had no idea what a prevalent session group they were, or the animosity harbored over it.

It’s weird, lately I have become much more open to music and bands I never was interested in before, I’ll probably have to check Toto out in better detail

Human Nature is a great song and Michael Jackson is remembered most as a music icon of my generation.

They played on "Off the Wall" and "Thriller". One year, they played on 3 of the 4 record of the year nominees at the Grammys. Quincy Jones basically used them as MJ's house band.
Listen to "The Gospel According to Luke", his autobiography. You'll have a brand new outlook on him / TOTO. Nothing but respect for them.

Steve Lukather hates it. But, imo, it's one of their two best songs(Hold The Line).

If you’ve never seen Rick Beato’s “ what makes this song great” series on YouTube, you might want to see this one on Toto’s Rossana

Always annoying when a dancer/singer is remembered for this

as far as him sitting down and playing instruments? Or just a pop vocalist?

Cause I'd love to see this musical icon play a scale or two
