Rain Dogs is his best in my opinion...
Honestly, you can't go wrong buying any of his records. He is one of my all time favorites...

Tom Waits take a while to get into. But once you do, it's over. I love his ballads.

I bought Bone Machine in the mid-90s when I was actively into exploring new music, having heard that Waits was such a huge influence to so many other artists. I have to admit I had trouble getting into it. But it bears mentioning that I bought Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind during that period as well (was already a Dylan fan) and that didn't click with me either. I gave Time Out of Mind another try a few years later and it sounded like a new album to me and became one of my favorites... I'm thinking it's time to give Waits another listen.

Bone Machine isn't a good place to start with Tom Waits. Check out Rain Dogs, Small Change or Mule Variations.

:) Same here. Bone Machine was my first one (and I agree probably not the best one to start with). And had I not been so poor (and felt like I had to get my money's worth out of a $20 CD) so I kept listening to it. It clicked at some point.

"Closing Time" and "Heart of Saturday Night" are two great albums. Don't like the later stuff as much as early years. speaking of, "The Early Years Vos. 1 & 2" are good ones, too.
