Country Joe McDonald comes to mind. Started his music career with anit-vietnam songs rallying the hippies. Cashed in on the sentiment of his audience, just like Toby Keith.

If you don't understand the correlation, then I don't think we will have a good discourse on this.

I am in no way trying to support Toby Keith and his cashing in. I was just pointing out your hatred for Keith and his cashing in is similar to the anti-Vietnam movement, except one didn't negatively affect the troop moral, but instead is uplifting.

Fortunate Song – CCR
Run Through the Jungle – CCR
For What It’s Worth – Buffalo Springfield
Eve of Destruction – Barry McGuire
Blowing in the Wind – Bob Dylan

The point is that some performers are doing it the commercial profit and some are doing out of true patriotism and to honor our soldiers. The question is: Who does it for profit and who does it for the true message?

One for the latter I believe is this one

frankly I hate any music that brings up politics, even if I agree with them.

Toby keith's music is just fricking awful though, so it gets special level of hate.

Is a veteran, FWIW. As is John Fogerty (Fortunate Son).

Toby Keith's song is ignorant nationalism

There's nothing wrong with anti war songs IMO

I think it's shlock, but fact is Nashville studios light up like bottlerockets when any national tragedy occurs.

I'll cut Toby a little slack though, since he has done 9 USO tours. If you really want to hear a dissection of Keith, from a vet, google Toby/Kris Kristopherson and their (reported) exchange at Willie's 70th Birthday party.

Horrific song.

This song not only sounds bad, but the lyrics grate. "and they say we shouldnt go after bin laden..." who was saying that? He's having an argument with an imaginary foe.

DISAGREE. Just because something takes an "anti-" stance doesn't mean it is mutually exclusive to "cashing in." When there is a pronounced counter-culture that can be exploited, songs that pander to that counter-culture for the sake of generating revenue are quintessential examples of cashing in. Admittedly, that assumes we can discern the artist's motivations, which is questionable at best. If we're comfortable saying Toby Keith is cashing in on the prevalent attitude of his era, though, why are we not comfortable saying the same thing for any of the artists you quoted?

Springsteen
Wu Tang
Beyonce
Beastie Boys

All did exploitive songs about the same American Tragedy.

But, y'know, damn that Keith guy or whatever.

Personally, I think YOU are going after the low hanging fruit by isolating a country artist. Country has the fewest amount of defenders on this board of all the major genres.
