I guess REM has the Tigerdroppings Music Board posters to thank for the 90,000,000 albums they've sold.

Allmusic:
3 5 star albums
2 4.5 star albums
3 4 star albums.

So, 8 4 star or above. Yeah, only TD likes them

Yeah. If your musical tastes run towards pop punk and crap like My Chemical Romance

Pop punk is my guilty pleasure. It’s nostalgic music for me because it’s what I listened to when I was in middle school/hs. It reminds me of school dances, first crushes, the first girl who broke my heart, etc.

What I actually listen to a lot more is late 60’s-70’s hard rock. I’m a big fan of Zeppelin, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Van Halen. I hate a lot of 80’s music for several reasons:
1. I abhor synthesizers and drum machines
2. I cannot stand the sound of gated reverb snare drums
3. I can’t stand def leppard and duran duran while Bon Jovi and Journey have been run into the ground
4. So much of 80’s rock is cheesy and corny, but they’re taking themselves seriously. At least when pop punk was goofy, it was mostly in on the joke

There’s a fair amount of 80’s music I do like:
Van Halen (even Van Hagar to a lesser extent)
Metallica
Iron Maiden
GNR
ACDC
SRV

I even enjoy some Motley Crue on occasion.

However, the overall sound of the decade was just awful. All of the trademarks that make a song sound like it’s from the 80’s are all bad in my opinion.

I just literally never hear anyone talk about REM outside of this board. What songs should I listen to? They can’t be as bad as their “hits” like End of the World, Losing my religion, The One I Love. That’s some boring arse music that makes Gin Blossoms sound high energy.

That's just scratching the surface. Now feel free to tell me about the great music/musicians from 2000-2010.

Tears For Fears

Not a fan. Lots of synthesizer and gated reverb

Men At Work

Meh

The Smiths, Joy Division

Pretentious

Blondie

Lame

Hall and Oates

Even lamer
quote:

The Police

They’ve got a couple good songs
quote:

Kenny Loggins

Straight corny
quote:

Prince, Michael Jackson

Excellent songwriters and performers, but I really don’t care for synthesizers and drum machines
quote:

Huey Lewis and the News

Literally the lamest band on the planet
quote:

Foreigner

I cannot stand their hits as classic rock radio has driven them into the ground

Genesis

I hate Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins with the fire of 1000 suns for inventing gated reverb. I also hare Phil Collins’s voice

David Bowie

I hate his voice

Billy Idol

Cheesy but fun

Billy Joel

Prefer 70’s Joel
quote:

INXS

Cheesy but good
quote:

A Flock of Seagulls

Super lame

Lionel Richie, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Culture Club, Wham, Duran Duran

Lionel is alright, but are these supposed to be selling points? These are examples I would site for why the 80’s is lame.

The Scorpions

Cheesy but fun

The Bangles

Corny chick rock band

Toto

Their best stuff wasn’t made in the 80’s

The Beastie Boys, Run DMC

Cheesy but fun. DMC’s best songs were in the 90’s

Grandmaster Flash

Lame

Public Enemy

Best songs were in the 90’s

Pat Benatar, Bryan Adams, Rick Springfield

Yawn

Tom Petty

Great songwriter, terrible vocalist

Motley Crue

Cheesy but fun

Fleetwood Mac

Boring

Kool and the Gang

Not bad, but I prefer 70’s funk. I listen to a lot of Tower of Power.

Clearly, our tastes couldn't be more different. The only bands/musicians that I listed that I don't really care for is Bruce Springsteen and the hair metal. Didn't mention Aerosmith, so I probably should have left Springsteen off of the list too.

That emo/pop punk shite from the 2000s doesn't hold a candle to the worst band on my list.

The IRS years. Eponymous has a lot of their best. And just stop with the this board thing. It's makes you look really ignorant.

Wrong. To me their best, and best selling, arc was from Permanent Waves (80) through Signals (82).

I think sonically the 80's music is the best. It was where production was at its height and much better sounding than the 70's and still done on tape and big boards.
I love the synthesizers and gated reverb. Love all that stuff. It is just like candy for the ears. 80's is my all-time favorite decade of music.

HATE synthesizers and gated reverb. They’re like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. My favorite Rush album is “Fly By Night”.

I know, I’m so cringe listening to Pearl Jam, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Nirvana, Allman Brothers, Cream, Weather Report, Tower of Power, Tool, the who, Incubus, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alter Bridge, Gaslight Anthem, Aerosmith, black keys, black crowes, Black Sabbath, black berry smoke, ACDC, Boston, The Doors, foghat, hendrix, kiss, skynyrd, sly, james brown, wilson pickett, otis redding, audioslave, soundgarden, rage against the machine, bob seger, deep purple, foo fighters, jet…

I mostly talk about pop punk on here only because all of you old fogies reflexively trash it like kids playing on your lawn (like the silly corny music that was popular when you were a teen is all perfect). It’s not near as bad as y’all make it out to be, so I’m stuck defending it like anti-BR threads on the OT.

Ok, you can have them. Take Fall Out Boy too, while you're at it.

Fall Out Boy’s first album, Under the Cork Tree, was great. Not a fan of their later stuff. MCR’s “Welcome to the Black Parade” is a fantastic album, one of the best of the 2000’s. I never could get into Panic! At the Disco.

Hawthorne Heights is one band that I feel like I shouldn’t like, but do, especially their first album. I guess I was just at the right age for it when it came out.

Yellowcard is probably my favorite from that era, but Sum 41 had a couple great albums too with Chuck and Does This Look Infected. Sum 41 did a great job of maturing and evolving over time to the point that they’re now almost a respected metal band.

Green Day’s American Idiot is probably their only album worth writing home about after the 90’s, but it’s a good one.

Everything blink touches is magic. It’s a real shame how Travis Barker nearly died in that plane crash. It basically killed the band. Tom went on to do Angels & Airwaves, which is kinda cool, but very different. When they tried bringing Blink back without Tom, it was pretty boring.

All that stuff was the best of the late 90s/early 2000’s for me. The harder rock of that era I just don’t think was very good.

Pretty bad list as far as defending yourself against what you posted above.

Yes, I’ll really take seriously the opinions on taste from someone who tries to pass off Def Leppard as an example of “good” taste.

I probably dislike 75% of Kingbob’s list.
I’m not likely to take his recommendations because we don’t line up.

But these types of statements are pretty dumb.

People like what they like. Taste is personal. It is really not possible for someone to have horrible taste.

On the other hand statements like “that band/artist is terrible” is equally as dumb.
