I feel like it's proven every time a song like The Macarena comes out and people hear that it's the "latest thing" and jump on the bandwagon.
Instead of seeking out music that appeals to them, they just wait on pop culture to tell them what they're supposed to be listening to.
Or, if someone says something along the lines of "my favorite genres of music are boy band pop, nu metal, and bro country", it's a pretty safe bet that they have horrible taste in music.

If an "artist" throws a pile of shite at a canvas, there are people that will try their best to convince you that it's not only art, but a masterpiece.
Other people will tell you that it's just shite, which it is.

People are allowed to love terrible music. Top 40 radio proves this and has so since some time in the 80s. My ex-wife was one. Didn't mean her taste wasn't terrible, nor did it mean the music wasn't terrible.
