Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators were one of the first bands playing psychedelic music and were the first band to call themselves a psychedelic band.

Syd Barrett dropped so much acid that he went crazy and had to be fired from Pink Floyd. He didn't play psychedelic rock, he was psychedelic rock.

The Beatles invented it and led the way:
Tomorrow Never Knows
Flying
Blue Jay Way
A Day in the Life
I Am the Walrus
Sun King
Within You, Without You
Tomorrow Never Knows

A Day in the Life
I Am the Walrus
Sun King

No they didn't. They certainly were early purveyors of psych music but and contributed to the development but the Yardbirds predated the Beatles foray into psych music and several other bands arrived on the psych music scene at the same time as the Beatles. They were all influenced by Trans meditation and the visual art worlds embrace of swirling shapes and bright contrasting colors as well as Timothy Leary and LSD. The Beatles were already big when they started into psych music so they definitely mainstreamed it.

Yeah, this is correct. The Beatles started doodling with psychedelic music in 65 with the introduction of the sitar into their material.
The Yardbirds started into it in 66ish.

Cabinessence which was supposed to be released on The Beach Boys ill-fated Smile album during the Pepper days is amazing. Here is Brian Wilson doing it live in London.
