i know they are easy to shite on now...but back in the day there was no better local live show than cowboy mouth.
before fred became a cartoon character and with the red rocker and paul sanchez, they had well written songs, excellent and exuberant musicianship, and an engaged crowd there to make magic happen. if you weren't levitating you weren't alive

I was just watching some of their live videos yesterday. They're never going to be regarded as a "great band" but their live shows are entertaining as hell.
Fred is a damn character. Gotta be hard to sing, be that energetic, and drum.
ETA: Are You With Me? is still one of my all time favorite albums.

Saw them first at The Chimes, September 1986. I had tickets to The Smiths and R.E.M., and a dude from New Orleans on my dorm floor said, "Oh yeah, I've got better. I'm going to see Dash Rip Rock at The Chimes tonight!" So I checked it out. Great show, but an inebriated Fred seemed to be looking wayward on the street outside the club after the show!
Saw Cowboy Mouth about 10 times afterward. Always love the full lineup, with Sanchez and Griffith.
