The Greatest Guitar Solo You Can't Hear

Rick Beato breaks down the end solo by Christopher Cross on Ride Like the Wind
I know what you are thinking (unless possibly if you have seen Cross live), there isn't any guitar solo at the end of Ride Like the Wind. Actually there is a pretty wicked one but since it must have been bring your five year old child to work day when the track was mixed it is the absolutely lowest part of the mix. I never knew Cross had this in him and I do not understand why he did not let it come out and play more often.

I've always heard that solo and thought it was awesome. Yes it's muted, but it's not inaudible. I agree the mixing is terrible, and there's much of it being missed as a result. Absolutely fantastic song!
ETA: Holy shite. Just got to the part where RB plays the solo at the proper volume, and yeah you get so much more out of it. CC shredded it!

Love the part where he has his guitar strapped up and he is air guitaring instead.

Thank you for sharing that. Very cool. CC is definitely underrated.

On that legendary Christopher Cross debut album, there is a little known gem of a song called Minstrel Gigolo. Cross sneaks then unknown (heck, he's still largely unknown outside of serious music fans) fellow Texan Eric Johnson in for the solos on that track. If you want to hear what 24 year old EJ sounded like - that is your chance.
ETA:
I posted this before watching the video in the OP.

On a related note - session giants Jay Graydon and Larry Carlton played solos on that album.

And we're just going to ignore the bongo player?

The keys player not named Michael McDonald impresses me more.

Thank you for pointing this out, that was awesome. It felt a little bit like when a buddy told me Prince was awesome at guitar and I tried to pay attention from then on and realized it.
Random story - I was getting a ride to the office from the dealership shuttle in Houston like 17 years ago, and Ride Like the Wind came on. The driver kept bringing up his love for the backup singer, saying he doesn't know why that guy doesn't get more recognition or his own career. It was weird. I feel like he was baiting me into not knowing who Michael McDonald was, but I didn't really want to get chatty. That or he legit didn't know. Probably the former.

I don't think McDonald actually played on the studio recording, just background vocals.
Michael Omartian (the album's producer) played a lot of keys on the album, but is only listed as the acoustic piano player on Ride Like the Wind. Rob Meurer was Cross' main musical collaborator (along with Omartian) at the time he launched his career with that album. Meurer is credited for the keys for RLTW (and Sailing, the other monster hit from that album). Sailing was actually a #1 hit. RLTW got stuck behind Blondie's "Call Me" for 4 weeks.

I was talking about the hot girl playing keys on the live performance that I linked. McDonald is also playing keys in it.
