I don’t really have a strong opinion on them either way but I know a lot of people hate them. What’s the reason?

They have terrible taste in music.

It's become the cool anti thing to do. Kinda like not liking the Eagles after they were mentioned in a movie.
The Doors were a groundbreaking band that didn't sound like anything else of that time.

Their studio/radio stuff was not the best in the world outside of "Love Me Two Times" & "Light My Fire". In concert they were one of the most unique and talented bands around.

I think most of the hate come from Morrison's antics and his pseudo intellectual lyrics. The musicians were all top notch. I think Morrison was a great frontman too.

If you hate LA Woman, you are the problem.
They are very “of their period”. But they were groundbreaking at that time.

The Doors were essentially a garage band with beatnik poetry pretensions: a mixture of Love, Paul Revere & The Raiders, and Jack Kerouac.
They pretty much stayed true to this concept throught their history. They never went country, psych, artsong, or heavy metal. They briefly experimented w/strings and toyed w/bubblegum -- both permitted, at reasonable levels, w/in garage.
Their producer quit b/c he opposed cutting "Love Her Madly". Even he didn't understand that it was as much a part of their sound as "L.A. Woman", the same way "Pale Blue Eyes" is as much Velvet Underground as "White Light White Heat".
Some people don't care for Morrison's beatnik poet schtick (and to be fair, they have a point). Others may not care for the garage ethos, hearing music through the vantage point of Zep, Yes, or the Eagles.

What? How is Strange Days not psych?
I like The Doors. Seems like a lot of people grow out of them and/or just hate Morrison but I still spin some of their better cuts- particularly the longer ones such as the aforementioned LA Woman, Light My Fire, The End, and the underrated When the Music's Over.

That's kind of what I meant by "of the period". Does anyone "care for" a beatnik? I hate when any singer breaks into a spoken word type poetry ramble. The only time I can recall it being acceptable is The End. "The killer awoke before dawn". It adds to the song for me.
The Doors are also very much a band IMO you can only be receptive to at a certain point in your life. Then it fades. Gotta be a certain age and a certain mood or intoxication level to enjoy The End or When the Musics Over. 11 minute drone songs are tough.

There's way better songs than those recorded in studio and i'll just list one: The End.

Hey musick...don't take this personally but I was about to post the opposite when I read your post.
I like the Doors but if I have to hear "The End" one more time in my life I'll have to kill someone.
I lost a bet to a friend one night, and as a payoff I had to convince the bartender to play that song at the bar--AND buy the drinks.

Nothing personal man. I'm just pointing out that one bc it's classic.
I prefer When the Music's Over between the two.

Damn man. I like The Doors.
Got into them in college.
One of our strip bar games used to be finding a stripper who would unwittingly dance to The End. Had to tip the DJ though. Lol
