I just can't get into Sturgill Simpson. I really want to like him, but he's just not my favorite.
With that being said, I think there is some damn good Southern Rock or Southern "Americana" being made today. I really like Blackberry Smoke. The Drive By Truckers are still one of my favorites. Jason Isbell is awesome, and I also like Shawn Mullins.
I know there are more and others. However, I don't know that I would consider any of it "country."
Country has always evolved, then come back to its roots at some point. Take the early 80s for example. All post Urban Cowboy country was "popish." Then the hat acts brought back roots country. Then it evolved again to "bro country." It will evolve back. Even Texas Country is more "bro-ish" than it was.
However, a lot of the traditional artists are still making good records despite not getting much airplay. Dolly Parton, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dwight Yoakum, and many other have made some really solid albums recently that would have been smash hits 20 years ago, but are instead met with crickets by the country music establishment.

Hank 3 and Blackberry Smoke were sent by the Lord above to save country music from all of the tight jean wannabes spewed out of Nashville. Honk is not dead yet, trust me.

I really like his sound. Reminds me of Keith Whitley.

I think yelawolf, ritz, and struggle Jennings are the future of country music

I really like Blackberry Smoke. I was disappointed I had to miss their show at the Varsity last month.
I also dig Turnpike Troubadours and American Aquarium. Stapleton has been a breath of fresh air in Nashville.
There's great music out there, but radio country is literally the worst, most disingenuous, formulaic, cynical, crap in the modern popular music sphere. Bro-country makes Drake sound like Mozart.

Basically Americana is country music today. The radio crap is just pop with a twang. There's nothing country about it. Original country was more folkish

Being a fan of disco biscuits, Bert has obviously accepted that mediocrity is his reality.

Who is this "Burt Reynolds" clown?
I know I'm not terribly active on this board, but I can smell a rat.
