Listen to this from 1971 and he was a real leader. This is some serious cutting edge at the time without sophisticated effects guitar jam!! The real deal starts at the 5:42 mark.

Without a doubt. Beginnings is some great guitar playing.

He was fantastic..... especially when you consider the variety of Chicago’s music.....

When Hendrix says you're a better guitarist than himself, yeah, you're pretty fricking good.

Yes.
Listen to the album version of “25 or 6 to 4”. He was incredible.

I have always like Chicago wide variety of music but I stumbled on their 4 album live concert at a garage sell a few years ago and his ability live is simply amazing. Definitely one of the best and arguably the most underrated ever. He did it in the studio and on the stage where the rubber meets the road. I bring this up because there is a cool documentary out their on Netflix about the group...

I don’t know, but the last thread on this and the last thread in the Chicago documentary should shed some light on it:

I am a huge Chicago fan, especially the Kath era. If you listen to Chicago at Carnegie Hall (1971), he is all over that record. South California Purples and the extended solo is amazing - Kath leads it and Cetera, Seraphine, and Lamm improvise their parts when they realize where Kath is going.
VIII ('75) - I think their last great TK album - has his tribute to Hendrix:
Oh Thank You Great Spirit
And just the four piece of Kath, Cetera, Seraphine, and Lamm

When Jimi Hendrix praises your guitar chops, you're pretty fricking awesome

It's amazing how often this topic comes up.
