He’s a weird fricker when he comes to releasing music. He only plans to have 5 albums correct?
5 or 6, and he says he is sticking to it. Music isnt his life, especially since he started having kids. He's kind of like Daniel Day Lewis. Absolutely great at what they do, but it doesnt define them, and does everything on their own schedules.

Yeah, but his latest album was terrible. I couldn't finish it.
Terrible is a bit of a stretch. It was definitely over-produced imo. Id much rather hear his voice against a more stripped down sound than some van morrison concept album but thats just me. I thought there were a few great tracks on there
I do worry a little that sturgill will stay on the path of sucking his own dick the way this board does and just try entirely too hard the next few albums

A huge stretch. His last album was very good and adventurous. He's tried something different with each album. Hightop was more of a solid country album. Metamodern blended country and psych rock. Sailor's Guide was like nothing I've heard before either. I hope he changes things up again to keep things fresh and exciting.

While I don't agree with them all 100%, I respect that he's come by his views and opinions honestly-he's not an elitist with no experience in the real world. And so far, his music has not been overly preachy like some others (coughjasonisbellcough).
I like his concept-Its like the best TV shows-They don't just hang around and keep putting out crap just for the sake of making something. He's got a very specific idea in mind and when that's done, he's done. We'll see if he sticks to it. I did hear him say one time not too long ago that he would leave the door open to work with other artists on something beyond his 5. So far, I have enjoyed all 3 albums very, very much.

He was on Joe Rogans podcast today.
Just listened. solid laid back, insightful interview with sturgill as usual
That said, rogans woke meathead routine gets really really old sometimes

Because it's better
Nah. If you are looking for more of a straight country sound, I can see why you would say that. But Metamodern is brilliant from start to finish, with much better songs.

1a Meta Modern
1b Sailors Guide
2 High Top

Anyone shitting on Sailors is out of their fricking mind. There’s a reason it had more critical acclaim than his other two. It’s a fantastic album. It’s cohesive af too.

I knew youd pull up in here and deliver some major salt

I don’t shite on sailors.....but there is a reason it gets way less play than the other albums for me and literally everyone else I know.
It was well done for what it is but meta and high top shite all over it. We can go song by song if you’d like.

2 might be too generous. Meta Modern and Sailors Guide are so far above and beyond High Top because they are not shackled and confined by the "traditional country album" goal Sturgill had for HTM. That freedom allowed for a more diverse and interesting sound on the two recent albums.
One thing I noted from the Joe Rogan podcast is he said he has enough material for a double album and another album already, and he wont do an extensive tour until those are released so he has a lot of music to choose from

Ive never been enamored by High Top.
Metamodern and Sailors are easily the best for me. Metamodern is like a 10/10 and Sailors is probably a 9.5/10

Sailors is great but I can’t drink beer to it on the boat while fishing.....sorry

The thing I hate about sturgill is he uses that Motown bullshite on everything he touches
Horns, backup singers, Hammond organ
He's the strawberry beer of country. It'd probably be alright without the gay strawberry flavor
He even tried to ruin Tyler Childers music when he produced it

You know how I know you don't listen to Sturgill?
If you are going to troll, at least put in half an effort to be smart about it

I will concede that he didn't have the temptations as his backing band on high top mountain but that's probably because he couldn't afford it back then
Lucero tried this and it sucked for them too

So you expect me to go see the live show of a band I don't like on album?
