Looking for a decent first guitar. Something to learn the ropes and just have fun with.

Any suggestions?

Electric or acoustic?

Do you have a budget?

Regardless, I'm going to recommend you play a bunch at your local guitar center and tried one of their used guitars or scour Craigslist/Ebay for good deals. No reason to spend the premium on new if you don't know if you're going to stick with it.

Martin D-45.

Don’t punk out.

I’ll reserve my real input after you answer the previous post questions.

Acoustic

Loose budget. Keeping it around a couple hundred bucks if possible.

$200 is possible.

Go all over to any guitar center you can find and pick them up. Whatever feels and sounds right. Look at used as well.

Yamaha is good in that range I think. Gretch has some in there too. Parlor sized though I think.

Do what these other guys said. Go pick them up and see what feels good, it makes a huge difference. Don't spend too much, this won't be your last guitar if you like to play.

If you have a friend who plays or is familiar with guitars, I would bring them along. They can help you to find one with low action that will make it easier for a beginner to play. When I went out looking a couple of years ago, everyone said get what feels right after playing a bunch of different ones. But honestly I had no idea what it was supposed to feel like since everything felt awkward since I had no idea what I was doing. I would imagine you should be able to find a decent used guitar already set up in your price range.

If you want a new guitar, I would say punch that up to the $350ish range - but, again, I wouldn't recommend new right out of the gate. Ideally, borrow a friend's beater guitar for about 3 or 4 weeks and see how that goes. No harm, no foul if you don't take to it.

But, Yamaha and Seagull have some good values you ought to be able to pick up in the used market. Most offerings in this range from big brands will be Chinese made, but don't let that scare you off (Seagull will most likely be Canadian, although the may have some imports - just not sure).

I'm going to recommend you learn to tune by ear, too. That's tough, at first, but if you go with a tuner (like I did), you're probably cutting your chances of tuning by ear - ever - in half.

Christmas is comin' (much like LSU) and there will probably be a big pile of instruments on the used market shortly thereafter if you can wait that long.

I will echo the idea of buying used versus new. There are many influencing factors that can skew my next statement, but generally speaking new guitars will typically depreciate almost immediately about 50 percent off MSRP on the used market. That means you can get the same guitar about half off when it's used, or get twice the guitar quality-wise for the same expenditure buying within the used market.

If you're buying used, particularly with acoustics, have someone who plays or has reasonable knowledge about what guitars should play, feel and sound like when you're testing candidates.

For acoustics, I also like Yamaha and Seagull for their bang for buck factors and their being readily available on the used market at value-friendly prices. For electrics, I am very impressed lately with the Squier Classic Vibe series guitars that have been crossing my bench for the money their owners spent on them. Consistently good guitars for their asking prices and readily available new and used.

FretShack - have you run across many of those Chinese Ibanez models? I got one for the boy about 10 years ago, and that thing was fantastic. The pups were a little weak, but overall, I was super impressed with what less than $300 bought at that time.

One more thing I'll add. There are many bargains to be had but just be sure that whatever you end up with is playable. A $200 guitar where the action is so high that you never play it isn't a bargain; it's a waste of money. It's better to pay a little more for a guitar that you'll practice with than it is to save money but end up with a guitar that sits in the closet.

I'd go with a Epiphone or Squire if you're not that serious about it.

Ibanez in general tends to be pretty good value-wise. The recent Indonesian-made guitars, particularly the higher echelon MII stuff, are shockingly good for the asking prices. Same for the Indonesian-made neck-thru Jackson guitars. I suspect they're made in the same factory.

Be careful, however, on the Chinese forgery Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, etc., you can find online through sites like Aliexpress. That stuff is stupid cheap compared to what they are copying and tends to look good visually but those guitars are very, very lackluster as a whole and hit and miss on quality. I've had some decent ones cross the bench but I've had others that had serious structural flaws that would cost as much to fix as the cost of the real deals they were emulating. Regardless of how you feel about counterfeiting and forgery, buying those guitars blind can really be dice rolls. I wouldn't take the gamble personally.

My personal opinion would be to start on an electric guitar for no other reason than it is just easier to play. Rage quitting due to frustration is a very real thing.

If you must go acoustic, get light strings at least.

I got a Classic Vibe Telecaster off Craigslist for $180.

I'm a shite player, but I'm very happy with it.

But seriously, Breedlove makes some decent guitars for the price.

You can also get a travel size Martin or Taylor for around 300 to 400 dollars.
