Springsteen and Elton John compared to...

Springsteen and Elton John are obviously rock legends and deserving of that status. However, I consider them to be far below other legends such as Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffet, David Bowie, and Paul Simon.
When listening to random songs on Sirius, there are only 3-4 songs (each) from Springsteen or Elton John that I 'might' listen all the way through. The other legends are all vastly different in their music styles but each have at least 12+ songs that I almost always listen until the end.
Just curious if the consensus is that they belong in the legends group or not.

I guess it kind of depends on personal preference. Personally, I don’t think Billy Joel and Jimmy Buffett should be in the same tier as Bob Dylan and David Bowie. And I would take Springsteen and John over Joel and Buffett.

Their strength is the song, honestly. Neither really gives off a rock vibe, although they were stupendous entertainers in the 70s and 80s (I guess Springsteen still is and Sir Elton on occasion).
But, on the Americana side - Seger was always better than Springsteen.
"Piano Man" - Joel was always better than Sir Elton.
Plus, as you've correctly pointed out - although each has a significant body of work, unless you're a hardcore fan of one of them, you won't go much past 3 to 5 songs, honestly. Even casual fans of Joel probably did 10 or so. More from Petty.
Now, Buffet - I can't agree with. He is a cross between Dylan (or even the Eagles) and the Dead - no hits to speak of, but has an incredible live reputation and following.
Honestly, I can't name a Buffet song after Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise.

Thanks for the informative response. Regarding Jimmy Buffet, I like almost all of his songs from his Greatest Hits (think it was called 'Songs You Know by Heart'. Some of my favorites were A Pirate Looks at Forty, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Changes in Lattitude, Volcano, and Come Monday.
IMO, Buffet's obnoxious fans and Margaritaville have overshadowed his other really good songs.
Also an FYI that all of these legends peaked before my time.

In my opinion, they are at least on par with those you listed. My order of preference:
1.Billy Joel
2.Elton, up to Rock of the West-
lies.
3.Bowie
4.Tom Petty
5.Boss
6.Buffet
7.Simon
8.Dylan, great lyricist, never
cared for his music.

Billy Joel and Jimmy Buffet have nothing to do w/ R&R
Most interesting thing about BJ is considering how wimpy his music is, according to classmate Bill O'Reilly he was a creepy thug-wannabe in HS
Although I don't care for most of Springsteen's post-'70s work, he was an amazing live performer and far above most of the people you listed (aside from Dylan of course, Bowie, and Seger's 60s stuff)

Graham Parker, talking about the misinformation prevalent in the bad old USSR, once said "People in Russia think Billy Joel is a R&R star"

Does Not Compute!
Not the biggest fan of any of the four though don't dislike any either. The aforementioned two's Greatest Hits are better than the latter's. And I like Bowie much better than any artist you list. Hell, I like Joe Strummer and Paul Westerberg and Josh Rouse and Tom Waits better than your list.

What the frick is this list?
You just picked a bunch of singers who come from a bunch of different genres.
Elton John far below Tom Petty and Jimmy Buffet? Clown

Not a chance.
As for the OP, please listen to Tumbleweed Connection and 11-17-70 before you try to tell me there are only 3-4 EJ songs you like.

Just wow!! Jimmy Buffett a legend? He is an average talent, glorified, and ULTRA SUCCESSFUL lounge act due to his "parrothead army". He is a GENIUS because he as parlayed this "toes in the sand and it's 5 o'clock somewhere" bullshite into MULTI MILLIONS.
Not one mention in this thread of one of the true legends, Prince. People may scoff at that, but I am sure that many of those legends listed in this thread would be happy to say how much of a badass Prince was.

I knew down votes were coming and can understand some of the criticism. I realized they were from different genres but were from somewhat the same era.
I knew that Springsteen and Elton John were obviously legends but have had a few conversations (not many) over the years with people that also think they are overrated. I didn't 'start' these conversations but agreed with them. During the latest conversation, I wondered if others felt this way also. I'm guessing not based on the larger sample size of this thread.

I actually almost mentioned Prince. I agree that he's a legend and belongs in any legends group (even a random one like I put together).
I've watched that While My Guitar Gently Weeps performance with him and Tom Petty (and others) about 20 times over the past year.
I guess my point is that Springsteen and Elton John don't do it for me over the radio, maybe live is different. I also knew that putting Jimmy Buffet in the list would get some attention as he has a lot of haters (similar but different than Springsteen).

I really don't know what to tell you if you think that Elton John only goes 5 or so songs deep. His discography is massive with many, many hit and recognizable songs stretching over decades.

Elton John
One hell of a composer, performer and pianist. He provided the perfect accompaniment for Bernie Taupin's lyrics. I couldn't disagree with the o.p. more.
His band is as good as it gets too. Been with him for decades.
Never been the biggest Springsteen fan, but he's still a deserved legend also.

Damn, Springsteen is One hell of a songwriter.
Thunder Road is probably one of my all time favorites, and a lot of others of his too.
Elton John Has a great voice, and such a great Piano player.
Billy Joel? I never cared for him myself,it's just mostly bubble gum music IMHO. Piano man was a great song, but his other stuff, mostly on the level of Hughie Lewis And The News.
Jimmy Buffet? Just cliche stuff.
