Got to thinking about this reading through the "favorite guitarist" thread. What really makes someone a great guitarist?

There's such a huge spectrum of genres and styles of the players mentioned in that thread. Is there one factor which makes someone "great"?

Creative soul. Technical ability and the understanding that music genius is deeper than that.

Technical ability makes a really good guitarist. The greats play with their souls instead of their brains.

Playing for the song.

Pyrotechnics are great, but I believe a great guitarist should be just as good at rhythm as lead.

I don't have much use for by-the-rules technical proficiency. I prefer players who have a distinctive voice and a unique ability to create sound. By whatever means that requires.

Being able to "sing" through the instrument. In other words, making the guitar as expressive as ones voice so that it conveys subtlety and nuance. In my opinion, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour and Jeff Beck are masters at this.

Clapton too. Let the note breathe and even die. Yngwie Malmsteen is amazing. But that speed and technique is more like a trick than playing.

But when a Clapton or Gilmour blows up with a flurry of notes (rare) it becomes amazing.

Metallica is a prime example. Kirk and James can fly, especially in their prime. My favorite of their guitar songs/parts Fade to Black outro solo. Which neither Slow Hand slow or Metallica fast.

That’s easy: someone who has long skinny fingers and a pinky finger that has an extra knuckle and can stretch to 150% of its normal length to reach two or three frets down the neck of the guitar.

John Frusciante once said that its not just the notes you play, its the music in between the notes also.

Something to that effect. It always stuck with me.
