Old fart question . . .
I was just channel surfing last night and hit some late night music station and heard Vampire Weekend, One Republic and Fun within about 20-30 minutes.
Here's the question. Really? This is where pop music is today? Yikes! Am I overreacting?

Ok. Give us an example of pop music from "back in the day" that you think is average.
I'm not a huge fan of the others but I like vampire weekend. Last album was really good.

Vampire Weekend isn't terrible.
Fun. sounds like it should be played as the soundtrack to an abortion.

Out of the 3, Vampire Weekend is the best...But One Republic and Fun are so bad, I would rather have prostate cancer than listen to them

I agree with Seaward. Which is why I'm curious to know the OPs opinion of a good or average pop song.

I have never cared for VW... granted, ive only heard their "hits"... I dont hate it, but not a fan of the sound... specifically, the guitar...
Ive actually never heard of One Republic, and dont care for the one Fun song Ive heard..

I dont know what else you'd classify them as... on sound alone, its pop music (not meant to mean top 40/mainstream music)

It's like a type of Afro-beat style
Givers kind of ripped a lot of style from them..

It's got lots of melody in it, but I don't think it's pop music at all. It's not mainstream pop anyways.
It's absolutely alternative indie rock with African influence...

I remember back in my day we had the Beatles and other great bands like those. These bands nowadays don't come anywhere close to being as great as those. As I was telling my grandson a few days ago, you can keep your justin bieber id rather listen to Phish and the Beatles. (In that order
)

yeah, but its still just pop music... That its not played all over main stream radio, I guess i can understand the "alt" prefix, but its still just pop
I mean the Police had a lot of reggae influence, but it was just pop music..
Paul Simon's Graceland has a heavy influence of African rhythms, but its just a pop record...
That's part of why i dont like them that much, I'm not a fan of the afro-pop guitar... I mean on a song here or there, fine...

I don't think of the police as "pop" music
Were the the clash a pop band?

The police isn't pop music? What else would you classify them as? They definitely don't seem to fit into the Rock genre.

towards the end, they were putting out pop songs...
Police were very much a pop band and quite literally too... they were very popular and mainstream during their time..
Im gonna end this here, because I'm using the term in a very generic sense, where you appear to be using in it in different context...
Personally,I dont think you have to be Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, George Michael (showing my age) or whatever to be pop music... I love pop music, but it seems that its a negative descriptor to a lot on this board...

Are you familiar with the police?
