I like both.
The hate for Bruce is political and the fact that he is a loud-mouthed Yankee. Southerners don't take kindly to arrogant northerners. It's also hard to relate to Bruce's lyrics, as a southerner.

Springsteen doesn't have a single song that can hit you right in the heart/gut like Against the Wind or We've Got Tonight.
Seger's sense of melody is radically superior to Springsteen's.
And his voice is way better too.
So, to summarize - Springsteen sucks

Barry Manilow sense of melody is superior to both and also has a great voice, so you must love Barry Manilow, right?
As far as songs that hit you right in the heart/ gut (2 very different things, by the way):
Springsteen:
Secret Garden
Blood Brothers
Youngstown
Growin' Up
One Step Up, Two Steps Back
The River
Lost In The Flood

While the Boss has earned much street cred with Born in the USA, most of his songs seem to relate to growing up in New England and steel mills, etc.
Born in the USA was pretty late. His fame was already well-established.
BTW, New Jersey in not in New England.

I prefer the '60s Seger to his later work.
His first two albums was released in 1969.
I really enjoy both honestly.

For my money, Atlantic City is also a tremendous portrait of a desperate man.
Now I been looking for a job, but it's hard to find
Down here, it's just winners and losers and "Don't get caught on the wrong side of that line"
Well, I'm tired of coming out on the losing end
So, honey, last night, I met this guy, and I'm gonna do a little favor for him

Meh. Against the Wind, Horizontal Bop, Her Strut all dreck. (I like Fire Lake though.) Compare that to Darkness on the Edge of Town or Nebraska. Not even close.

His Live Bullet album is upper echelon of live albums

Seger by a mile for me. I never was all n on Bruce.

Seger easy peasy.
Have never liked Springsteen. The dislike started long before I knew his origins or politics. My ears just have no appetite for his stuff.

‘Born to Run’ ruins Springsteen for me. Has given me an unfair bias against him.
Just sounds too cheesy to me. Not enough electric guitar. Which is a shame because he is really damn good on the guitar when he wants that to drive things.

BTR was definitely tBS turning point. Wiki:
One way not to capture it is to spend six months on one track
quote:Springsteen's claim to greatness is as a live performer. "Rosalita" from the previous album had managed to capture some of that.
Springsteen sought to emulate Phil Spector's dense, crisp, and energetic yet difficult to achieve Wall of Sound production, leading to prolonged and grueling sessions with the E Street Band lasting from January 1974 to July 1975. The band and producers spent six months alone on the title track, "Born to Run".
