The only song I really didn't want to miss, "Stay", and he doesn't play it! It's not like the guy has so many giant hits that he can skip one. He still sounds good, show a little bit sedate, but sound was good. Thought for sure he'd close w Stay. Left disappointed.
Did he play The Load Out? If not, you truly shouldn't have expected him to play Stay. Anyway, you should be more upset that he didn't play the Load Out.
I last saw JB about 5 years ago and it was incredible, although I was disappointed that For a Dancer was done solo with him at the keyboard instead of the full band.
I still hold out hope that one day I'll get to see him do a full set with David Lindley. Lindley is the glue on all the early albums. His playing on the entire Late for the Sky album is truly perfect. One of the great recording efforts of all time.
Amongst the "singer/songwriter" guys of the 70's, Browne's work towers. It's so complex and so much going on that it's almost embarrassing to compare it to someone like, say, James Taylor.

Dude, were you high? The crowd was mesmerized. Sorry you have no taste.
No, I was drinking water because I had to speak at length today.
Not sure what mesmerized crowd you're referring to. Everyone around my area was upset and that's what everyone was talking about outside after the show. People were yelling 'old stuff' in every section of the building. You're clearly a Browne fan and I'm indifferent, but no one was mesmerized. Pissed during the concert? Comments everywhere, yes. But no one was mesmerized. I paid to hear 'x song' and wish I hadn't gone, yes. Sound was great, I enjoyed it, great musician and everything sounded great. But let's be honest, people were groaning more than cheering and that was very clear to see.

So, out of curiosity, was Rosemary Butler singing backup for Jackson Browne, and was David Lindley the guitarist? On the live version, she does the solo vocal in Stay, and Lindley sings the falsetto solo.

I don't recognize either of those, though those look like old pics. Maybe the slide guitar player, I didn't catch the name. Definitely not the back up singer though.

Went to Garth Brooks world tour in ATL last year. Mother fricker did every song he had except for Thunder Rolls.

Yep hundreds of pissed off peeps in my section as well. He's a great musician with great hits that made him who he is. Yet he chose not to please the peeps who made him . I say he fuked up...

Rick Springfield pulled that shite where he "played" a bunch of his hits in some crappy, superfast medley just so we could be "treated" to some of his crappy newer stuff.
What a rip.
What a rip.

Lol.. Stay.. A song he didn't even write.
Do you mean the Load Out?

If I could have heard only "For A Dancer", "Before the Deluge", and "For Everyman" I would have been thrilled.
"Stay" is just commercial pablum he didn't even write.

While I agree this is a poor comparison, I don't want to let the implied slight to pass. James Taylor was, first and foremost, a stripped down "folk" singer of the 1960s tradition (he was just a little young) - and in the 1970s, they (I'm sure it was record-company driven) tried to amp him up to "soft rock" levels - to compete with the Fleetwood Macs of the world. However, JT was/is an incredible lyricist and singer - if that kind of music is your cup of tea.
But, on the whole Jackson Browne - along with Lindley - was a different creature. Similar to the early Eagles or Poco in vibe (1 part country, 1 part rock, 1 part folk) - although without much of those bands' layered harmonies - Browne was a tireless songwriter and, unlike many of his contemporaries, treated songwriting as a job - as work to be done.
I was more of a fan of his hits (Doctor My Eyes, the Running on Empty album, Tender is the Night, Lawyers in Love, etc.), but JB has something for almost everyone. I would be disappointed if I went to a show and he didn't play The Load Out/Stay, but maybe he does not feel as comfortable doing that arrangement without Lindley.

Those pics are from 1977 - 1978. Rosemary is still around, but I'm not sure if she goes out with JB any longer. Ditto for Lindley.

Did you go Rex? I agree w/ your post. I think we both saw him at the Union in 72 or 73 with the Doobie Bros (subs for Batdorf and Rodney).

Stay is not a song written by Jackson Browne and it's not even a top 5 Jackson Browne song anyway. I'd be more upset if he didn't play These Days or Birds of St Marks.

I'm happy to grant you this.

Yes, he's incredible. The level of layers and texture instrumentally and harmonically in his songs is unsurpassed IMO. Farther On is my favorite, although the entire Late for the Sky album is a clinic.

The hits are good, but I like the deep cuts for him.
