Both incredibly talent musicians. Both had their first album come out in 2007. I’m going with Bingham’s Mescalito album as better than Isbell’s Sirens of the Ditch. Who do y’all think is better?

I haven’t been able to stomach Bingham’s voice long enough to determine whether he’s a good songwriter or not.

Sirens of the Ditch is Isbell's 2nd best album IMO behind Southeastern.

The middle part of that album is gold.

Dress Blues > Grown > Hurricanes and Hand Grenades >
In a Razor Town > Shotgun Wedding

Also, it's tough to compare because Isbell was in a band for 6 years before this album came out.

Bingham's music is more interesting/enjoyable overall

Isbell is by far the better songwriter

Bingham is less cringeworthy

Isbell's serious music (ie, not "fire in my little girl's eyes") probably has better staying power

You could make the argument of Mescalito being the best album overall, but I really think it comes down to what you value. Bingham definitely has the sense of place pegged and you can really immerse in that album. But Isbell's songwriting can be remarkable and if you value that most he probably wins with Southeastern.

He definitely goes overboard with his daughter. "Something to Love" is a great song but "Letting You Go" off his most recent album seemed super forced and cliche.

I think it's particularly a problem for JI because we know he's a brilliant songwriter and his forced/cliche stuff intended to align with his new social consciousness or whatever just sticks out like a sore thumb IMO.

For other writers it may not be as eyeroll inducing

Something about Bingham's voice and his catchy, cheesy lyrics doesn't do it for me. I prefer Isbell. Truckers Isbell is on a different level than anything Bingham will ever do for me personally

Both started out great and quickly became terrible.

Spin off: Thoughts on Patterson?

I know his voice is a VERY acquired taste, but I've always liked DBT and love Hood's solo stuff.

Honestly even though Hood and Isbell are the more popular ones, I think Cooley has the best voice of the group.

Bingham for me. I really liked Isbell before he became Shire's little woke she-man . But I prefer both Roadhouse Sun and Mescalito to Southeastern or any of Isbell's other albums...

In reality, Bingham is just as far left and commie as Isbell. He's just not such a bitch about it...

Believe it or not their most recent album is actually really good musically. See “Sea Island Lonely” and “It’s Tough to Let Go”

This isn’t really an unpopular opinion. Cooley was never able to write as many songs as Isbell or Hood.

I only kinda like Bingham. I truly love many of Isbell's songs.

I like maybe two of Patterson's songs, and if I got one free punch on any musician in the history of the world, it would be to his jaw.

Sirens of the ditch is a much better album IMO.

Jason is a better songwriter and Ryan would tell you the same.

He is an insufferable SJW crooner with absolutely no sack and a very weak voice.

correct. Bingham's shows are better with his psychedelic jams. Jason is a far better songwriter.

And that is a shame. I would have never gotten into them at all if it weren't for his songs.

I hadn't realized this until a few months ago when I started watching/listening to some of his live cuts and he's started replacing "coonass" with "cajun" in the lyrics to Bread and Water.

Bingham's albums are more consistent in that you are going to get some good and some not so good. Isbell's are more of a Bell curve, with the peak being Southeastern.

I don't think anything can touch Southeastern...that album, front to back, is about as fine a collection of songs as have ever been produced. However, the farther you go out from that, the overall quality of Isbell albums decline. Something More Than Free was good, Nashville Sound was ok, Reunions was just not good at all to me.

Cooley is superior to both. "Women Without Whiskey" "Zip City" "Where the Devil Don't Stay"
