And not for his voice exactly. The way many of his songs just build in urgency and complexity as they go along is quite impressive IMO.
You have heard the song below a bunch. But listen again and notice how elements keep getting added, the tempo changes (I think) and the whole thing builds into a crescendo in under 3 minutes:
Dream Baby

His last album was surprisingly good. Love his cover of this Elvis Costello Song

Great track.
On this Traveling Wilburys’ song when Roy comes in it is like his voice is from another planet. What a singing talent

My dad's all-time favorite, so I grew up listening. A great talent.
One night while I was in college, I went home to eat dinner and do laundry and my dad had broken out all his old Roy Orbison vinyl for the first time in a long time. He said he just felt compelled to listen. I hung out with him a while and we commented on how distinctive Roy's voice was and that we were so glad he was experiencing a revival with the Wilburys, etc. The next day he called me at school to tell me Roy had died the previous afternoon/evening. I know...CSB...but my dad still thinks he killed Roy Orbison.

You Got It is a great song. Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne crush the backing. One of the best hits well outside of career peak by any artist.

Here's one I like that isn't very well-known.
Roy Orbison - "Cry Softly Lonely One" (1967)
Coming just after his great period of 1960-4 (on the Monument label), this was dismissed on first release as anachronistically stuck in the past. Now of course no one cares, and we can enjoy it for what it is.

His arrangements were always well done.
Blue Bayou is my favorite.
For some reason, I always thought that Beaudleaux Bryant wrote that song, but Orbison wrote it with some guy I'm not familiar with. Beautifully done.
Orbison did a crapload of the Bryant's songs though.

I concur - he's on my short list of favorite vocalists.

My stepmom had 2 favorite records.
Little Stevie Wonder and Roy Orbison.
I didn't appreciate them then..
But man.. the guy could wail.
When I was little I felt like he was an Elvis hack (my grandmother adored Elvis to no end so I guess I was raised to be biased).
But listening to Roy now, he really had a great voice and presence of his own

This actually is a cool story. You should tell your dad that he actually brought Roy Orbison back to life for you that night.

I give him full credit for my appreciation of quite a few of the greats!
Some years later I gave him a DVD of Roy's Black and White special which was taped just a short while before his death...Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Jackson Browne playing with Roy, along with Elvis' TCB band. k.d. lang and Bonnie Raitt singing back up...just a great show.
My dad is very ill now, and sometimes gets agitated. Putting on that DVD will invariably calm him down. Roy is still doing us some favors.

Orbison was a classical trained singer who Elvis said had a voice superior to his own.
Sadly I don't believe he reached his full potential.
