Wasn't it first thought that Clapton was on the helicopter?

Yep. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. I saw Clapton a couple of weeks later in B'ham, bought a t-shirt from SRV's last show, from some guy in the crowd.

I think it was Clapton's seat on the chopper that Vaughan took. Clapton couldn't make it and offered it to SRV.

His influences included Albert and Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Hound Dog Taylor, Lonnie Mack, Kenny Burrell, Jimi Hendrix and of course his older brother Jimmie Vaughn. Who else?

Chuck Berry, most of the blues greats like B.B. and Howlin Wolf, Albert Collins. Johnny Winter too. Hendrix was by far the biggest influence.

He used to steal Jimmie's licks to the point that Jimmie threatened to beat his arse if he did it again. Which of course he did.

I think I would argue that by far his biggest influence was Jimmie Vaughan.

Yes, I remember being on my way back to school in Austin and hearing about the crash on the radio, KGSR I think. They played several Clapton songs in a row, then found out it was SRV. The DJ got so choked up she couldn't even talk.

I was at work when a coworker who always listened to public radio came in and told me. I was gutted. Had the privilege of seeing him in concert once.

Several months later, the same guy came in and told me that "Magic Johnson has AIDS."

I would avoid that co worker at all costs.

Still remember the very first thing I ever heard him do - I remember hearing this on the radio and saying "Damn, that guitarist is something special."

His problems with the "white powder" were well documented, but his toxicology after the crash which was only a short time after the concert ended was clean for any type of drugs, or alcohol, sad that he died just as he was able to stay clean.

Before that Bowie album, SRV was either unknown or a myth to most people.

We had a couple over to eat one night. I had all SRV in a six disc player on shuffle. They were not familiar with him and asked who it was.

They left at 8:45 so they could get to the record store before it closed at 9. Bought a copy of every SRV CD in the store.

I was a metal head and shredder back in the day but got to see him on the Riverboat President back in the day and it changed my life in a lot of ways. I was 14 and got snuck in and stood in awe of the man.

Now I still play music and do deep cuts like Skake for Me from when he was with the Cobras. RIP SRV
