That was a pretty epic - and well supported - rant. I also love that Rick admits in the comments that it was really Joni Mitchell's inclusion in the list of future forgettables that set him off.

quote:

J B: When he called out Joni mitchell...thats when Rick pulled out the camera and pressed record lol

quote:

Rick Beato: OK, I admit that’s true :)

What an incredibly cynical and insensitive way to write a non-story. No one is as up their own arse as music critics/historians.

Culturally and commercially, every act of the 20th century is already in the trash bin. You think "kids these days" are listening to Elvis or the Beatles or Michael Jackson?

From 1900-2000 we created about 20 genres of music, relevant at some point or another, and in the last 20 years, we've thrown it all away. The only culturally relevant music genre right now is hip hop - and the least sophisticated, least inspiring, least lyrical hip hop imaginable at that. Commercial music as a cultural touchstone is dead for the foreseeable future. And if that's the case, will literally any musician from the 20th century when the art form was at this hypothetical apex even be remembered?

Good music will always last. Garbage goes away. The Beatles have been around for sixty years and will be around in another 60 years when the mumble rappers and teeny boppers from Disney have all been forgotten.

When rock and roll is referenced in history books 200 years from now, the Beatles will be pictured.

I have 3 kids: 18, 13, 5. All 3 like the Beatles and know who they are, and that's not from my input. It's because their music is still used in television and movies this day. As someone else pointed out: great music is timeless and will always be appreciated by every generation.

Your entire post is a case of when justifiable cynicism goes to far and destroys reason.

Clearly, some commenters didn't listen to Rick's Rant.

One of his main points was that nobody has a clue who will be judged relevant musically in 200 years, and certainly not a guy who doesn't seem to recognize how musically significant Joni Mitchell has been. The major support he used for this was JS Bach, who, 75 years after his death had been forgotten. Then Felix Mendelssohn came along and started reviving Bach's work and eventually his musical influence and significance became very widely known and celebrated.

I saw that and was cheering. Little effete prick talking like he was the voice of God. Although I will say my favorite review was in the 1980s for a band called GTR that some of you may recall . It simply said :

GTR = SHT.
