Rick Beato - "What Makes This Song Great"

Anyone watch this guy on YouTube? He's a former audio engineer and incredible guitar player who breaks down famous songs and explains, well, what makes them great. He has the master tracks and isolates the different tracks of each song. Really cool shite. Here's an example:
Ep. 3 - Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne

Someone posted about his reviews a couple weeks ago. Watched several of them. Interesting even for someone who has no musical talent, learning how songs and scores are put together and all the layers.

I've met Rick a few times and he's a really good dude. Super knowledgeable and accessible for people who aren't well-versed in music theory.
The guy LOVES music. I crack up watching videos of him breaking down songs and he ends up head bobbing or air drumming along with the track. That's his legit personality.
Only things I don't like about his videos are his compositions. They're mostly computer generated and sped up to hide the lack of melody or originality. They give a quick glimpse at modal shifts and whatever he's teaching, but I always shake my head at people lauding him for his ability to write those kind of songs.

Which part is computer generated? I'm ignorant when it comes to this stuff so genuinely curious.

Love them but makes me realize how much I don’t know about music.

Listen to the composition from this video. Starts around the 1 minute mark.
You'll notice the performance of the notes - especially during fast runs - sounds unnatural. They're programmed into music making software (Logic, Ableton, etc) sometimes as preset or precomposed runs. So for example, you click on "A harmonic minor arpeggio" and it spits it out for you. You copy and paste it where you want it to go.
There are also randomizers or pattern makers that you can use.
I'm not saying all of what he's doing is fake but a good bit of it is. Don't forget that as awesome as Rick is, his career is mostly situated on being a salesman for The Beato Book.

"preset or precomposed runs"
Hmm, sounds like you have only the slightest clue how DAWs work.
I highly doubt Ableton was used. Logic, maybe. Most likely recorded into ProTools since that seems to be what Rick has around the most.
DAWS generally don't have anything precomposed in them. Sure, one can get sample libraries with gestures either recorded in full or made to be used in certain ways (eg NI's Action Strings) but that isn't what is going on here...at all. I can't tell if he used some studio trickery to pull off some of that (punches, edits etc) or if it is programmed (by THE END USER) into PT or another DAW. The rubato sections make it less likely but he could have played stuff at a slower tempo, edited the MIDI until correct.
I assure you, nowhere in this piece did he click on "A harmonic minor arpeggio" and have it spit it out, then copy and paste. Just not how professional DAWs work.

I'm a professional musician, bubby.
There are plenty of software options (Riff Machine for example) to use with DAWs that can generate almost anything you want. Drum beats, melodic lines, harmony, key changes, modulations - they can all be preprogrammed and placed into tracks. You can take one note and click a few buttons to get something that you want. I've used them myself when generating backing tracks for solo gigs.

Hope you aren’t just talking about playing the triangle in an orchestra. Lol

It takes a lot of skill to ding that three sided bell at Carnegie Hall.

Holy shite this is incredible

So you admit you are a "professional" musician who uses computer generated music to provide "backing tracks"..... And Riff Machine?!?!? LOLOL Sorry, that's not a professional level tool.
Would you like to hear my credentials??
Worked on the music for TWO movies nominated for Best Picture Oscar (one as orchestrator of ALL the music).
Worked on the music for a film that when it opened had the biggest opening weekend in the HISTORY of film.
I have WRITTEN more than a dozen hours of music for one the world's most popular franchises.
I have written music for network television.
Scored several of my own series for various cable networks.
I have recorded at Fox, Sony and Paramount. As well as with orchestras in London (Abbey Road FTW!) Prague and Budapest.
Produced or co-produced the soundtrack albums for films grossing over $100M
I have used DAWs for going on 30 years. To write, program, record, edit, orchestrate and realize music. I have used Logic, Cubase, Cakewalk, Digital Perfomrer, Reason, and ProTools in a professional environment.
Those are just the highlights.
I know what I'm talking about...
Now, tell me again about your "solo gigs"
...bubby.

Check out the big brain on Brett!
Don’t believe you on any of that and if you’d like to provide proof to your illustrious career, go ahead.
I might only play the triangle, but I at least have played Carnegie Hall.

LOL. You don't believe me. Because those are the kinds of credits someone makes up when they are going to lie...
Everything I said is true. I also forgot to say I wrote 25% of a score that was nominated for a Prime Time Emmy. And at least half a million people heard my music just last night on TV. Also true.
Seems like a certain triangle player feels cornered.
Tell you what, I'll happily link to my IMDb credits if you post the link to yours.

Those are pretty much exactly the kind of credits someone would masturbate out if they were lying on a message board.
But do go on, internet tough guy. You’re really making an impact here discussing whether or not Rick Beato is using software to help write shitty compositions as supplements to his music theory videos.

LOL, I can see you are losing your grip on reality here.
Again, please, post your IMDb credits and I will
>>>GLADLY<<<
post mine. Perhaps those are the kinds of credits you like to masturbate to, but that's your business.
What's that? You have none?
Yeah, thought so, bubby.
Remember you started this with your boast and then talking out your arse. I merely showed you where you had erred.
